Books for Painters
Years ago, I asked for suggestions on art books specifically for painters. I wasn't looking for how to books. I wanted books that made me feel less alone as an artist, specifically as a painter. I was searching for books by other artists who've been there and know what it's like to work alone in your studio.
Here's some of my suggestions that have helped me over the years. Again, these are NOT how to books:
- The Blank Canvas Anna Held Audette
- Letters of Vincent Van Gogh
- Art as Experience John Dewey
- Art and Fear Bayles and Orland
- On Art and Mindfulness Enrique Martinez Celaya
- Painters on Painting Eric Protter
- The Shape of Content Ben Shahn
- What Painting is James Elkins
- The Art Spirit Robert Henri
- Art and Alienation Herbert Read
Any suggestions of things you think I'm missing?
