What You'll Find Here

I post daily (photos of my journal pages, things that inspire me and personal bits and pieces) to inspire and encourage others. I have always believed that if I can do it, so can you.

You'll find resources (my workshops both in person and online, things for sale, favorite supplies, books, slideshows of my art journal pages, favorite bloggers, etc...) listed along the right hand side of my blog.

I've been teaching both in person and online workshops for more than twenty years. You can find out more about my classes by scrolling down along the right hand side of my blog. I strive to make classes accessible to everyone (both beginner to advanced).

I love teaching and truly believe that deep down inside everyone is an artist, capable of creating something. There is power and knowledge in the act of creating something with your own hands, made from your own heart and head.

If you have any questions, please feel free to email me at EGorey99@sbcglobal.net

Thanks for stopping by!

Teaching in Whitman tomorrow!

Still taking last minute sign ups for Whitman and Westford! Hope to see YOU there!

I hope those of you who celebrate had a nice Christmas! I hope those of you who don't had some time off to do what makes them happy. My greatest gift was spending time with my family and seeing those whom I don't get to see often.

Some linkage love-

Safe travels! and some more info on ALMBH

For those of you out traveling this season (that includes me), safe, stress free travels!

Thank you, Corey!

Someone sent me an email yesterday asking the difference between my A Prompt A Day and My A Life Made By Hand class. Here's what I wrote back to her-

They're two totally different classes. It's a brand new class as I do not like to teach the same class repetitively. I have a lot of repeat students every month (both in person classes and online) so I need to make sure that I am offering something new and unique. My students really do push me and I want to teach classes that push them.

First off, the new class is much cheaper. $50 for 6 months. That's the one that grabs everyone off the bat.

People thought you had to keep up with A Prompt A Day and do it daily, but that was never the case. It's the same thing with A Life Made By Hand. There are 181 new journaling (yes, writing) prompts that are new and designed to make you think. I think they're more introspective. There are new writing prompts in ALMBH.

There are new collage techniques. NO painting. We're doing what I call "Painting with paper" where the focus is all collage. There are 25 collage techniques on the board. All different, all new.

I will be doing video demos as well. There are 5 on the board now with more to follow.

There are two different "How to make your own journal" pdfs on the board and one video, in case you do want to make your own journal by hand.

There are thousands of different prompts and ways of looking at things. I've found that out in my 12 years of teaching.

This class is specifically set up so that you can do a page in 15 minutes or less. You can do them daily or you can do them at your own leisure (for example, you could have your own mini retreat and do the prompts over a weekend or something like that). The prompts aren't hard, but they're not simple either. They are thoughtful, introspective and designed to make you think in new ways.

By the way, nothing has a date on it. The writing prompts are numbered as 1 to 181. The collage prompts are diagrams that are the size of 2x3" ATC size cards that you can cut out and carry in your wallet. Nothing says January 1st, 2nd, etc... I set it up that way so that no one would panic if they missed a date, that no one would think they had to do this daily (even though I do encourage it, but again work as you need to). It is stress free and fun.

There is some basic 411 info (paper I use, pen info, some other things too) on the board that I've copied over from A Prompt A Day, but it's meant to be a simple FAQ for my classes since I tend to use the same materials, but I approach my pages in a different way each time.

Hope this helps...

A dateless journal page...

I hate when I forget to put a date on a journal page.

Below is my first video! I've made five videos so far for my new, A Life Made By Hand class. This is just a test video of my pen case I've been toting around. My friend, Irene, was showing me her bags that she carries. She uses Eagle Creek's Pack It Cubes. So, I hit the Container store and bought a small one for my pens and a big shoe size one for all of my collage crap (not all but the special stuff I toted around). Please be gentle! It's my first video!!
(Huge thanks to David and Tristan for all of their help. Tristan shot the video!)

Meeting In The Ladies Room

You guys know me and books. The minute that Linda Woods posted that she and her sister, Karen Dinino had a THIRD book out and that it was *gasp* Self Published, I knew I had to have it *now*. I raced to Blurb to check out the preview. This is VERY high on my want list, my must have list. Pictures of women in the ladies room? Really? is probably what some would think, but no, most of us GET IT. We KNOW what happens behind those closed doors. We know the secrets, the camaraderie, the truths, the giggles, the tears-we know the reality of what goes on behind those doors where women gather alone and in groups. We get it.

Linda sent me a pdf file of the book to review. It's everything I had hoped for. It's filled with luscious photographs with yummy colors and textures and visuals. It's real women-it's us. It could be you or me in those photos. We've all been there. It makes me want to grab my camera and shoot some self portraits in front of the bathroom mirror (LOVED Theresa Mutzig-Erwin). It makes you think (someone else is thinking that?!). It makes you laugh (cupcakes in the bathroom sink). It makes you cry (someone else is yearning for just quiet time to themselves).

It's filled with pictures of real women in real places. It's filled with their thoughts, their dreams, their musings and their strengths. It would make a damn good gift for any female anywhere (I love Lucy from Belfast!). It's on my Christmas wish List. You should add it to yours, too (you still have time!)

The only thing that pisses me off is that I didn't think of it first. Leave it to the two sisters! You go girlfriends. Kudos on a job well done. Save me a cupcake.

Special Offer!
Blurb.com is offering our readers $10 off the book if they order by 12/31. The discount code is GREATGIFT

Everything you wanted to know about pens(!) and more...

Are you a closet member of PAA (you know, pen addicts anonymous)? Do you hoard pens? Do you want to learn different things that you can do with your pens? Are you stuck in a rut using the same black gelly roll glaze pen again and again? Are you curious about which pens you absolutely need? Wondering what works with your mixed media projects and what doesn't? Look no further. Most of you know, I don't travel light to my classes. In this class, I will be bringing ALL of my pens for you to play, learn and explore HANDS ON. We will not only work with the pens and learn what works, but we will be creating mixed media collage pages ("and more"). We will be using the pens on our newly created collaged pages. You will explore different writing techniques as well (think Urban Calligraphy style!)-yet, this is not a calligraphy class! YES, we will learn everything about pens (and more). YES, you will explore and play with different writing styles and techniques on your newly created pages. YES, you will walk out with a pile of completed pages and tons of ideas. YES, you will be inspired. YES, you WILL have fun!

A Few of my favorite things
Using cherished ephemera from that stash you've been hoarding you will build an inspirational book, a unique little tome that you will refer to again and again over the years. You guys have been begging me to teach this class since you first laid eyes on my little collage book that I've been keeping...You will walk out with a fully painted, fully hand bound, canvas board covered book made 100% by you! You will also walk out with your head spinning with new ideas for collage on the inside pages. Please make sure to bring some of your own treasures that you've been "holding onto" (and I will bring some of mine for you to use!) I guarantee this is one little book that will whisper to you to work on it's pages.
Supply list-
Students should please bring the following: Small selection of Collage ephemera (handmade/decorative paper, copies of old photos, magazine clippings, journal pages, art book pages, cherished cut outs-anything that "speaks" to you.
