Sanford Sharpie Water-based Paint Marker Sets Some Important Information

Last night I went to Michaels (not one of my favorite places but a last resort) to find some replacement packs of the pens you see in the photo above. My local Dick Blick had stopped carrying them and I couldn't find them elsewhere. I was a bit horrified to find them on clearance in the glass case (where our Southern California stores stock the pens) in two stores. Turns out the pens in packs are not selling well at all so the stores are clearing them out. I was told by one store if I kept the packaging that they would be able to reorder more if I needed them (so fyi on that!) I did notice two things: that at one store ALL of the water-based markers in a pack were on clearance and marked that. In another store, the pens were not marked but they rang up at the same price.
I am not sure what to make of this at the moment as the pens are on the Sanford website as still being available. Some of you may remember this happening a few years ago. I was then told (after many phone calls) that Michaels would be a test run and that depending upon how well the markers sold at Michaels that they would be "brought back." That was two or three years ago. Then last year, the pens you see above started popping up at not only Michaels but Dick Blick and other stores.
I'll keep you posted if I hear any more information. I love these pens and I really hope that they're not going away any time soon. Hopefully they will start selling the pastel, glitter and metallic extra fine pens open stock. Fingers crossed.

June Classes

Summer time means busy time for me! I'll be packing my bags and trekking to Northern California, New York City and Massachusetts. I'm looking forward to it.

My Perspective

Some see this and think mess. Others (like me) see this as an opportunity or even better, sanctuary. Almost everything fits back in that bag in the bottom left corner (except the stay at home container of washi and paper tapes.) Headphones are for listening to Old Time Radio shows (get me home in time for Richard Diamond, Gunsmoke, Jack Benny, Phil Harris, Suspense, Inner Sanctum and Dimension X, please!)

These are the things that get my heart going all pitter patter. Journal time in a comfy spot in a room where my loved ones are at the same time listening to old time radio surrounded by a few of my favorite things.

Contest Winner, Upcoming Classes, etc...

15 April 2013 Journal Page

Hard to believe that June is almost here. Summer is usually my busy season. I'm teaching two classes this weekend, one of which is a two day class (this is the ONLY two day class that I will be teaching this year!!!! I can't stress enough that it is unlike any other class you have ever taken from me and you will be pushed out of your box (in a good way!) I am very excited about teaching this class.) There's a teaser here of the pages in the journal as well as a little more information about what we'll be doing in the class. Did I also mention that I will be having little giveaways all throughout the Becoming class? Well, I am! Fun little goodies in this two day class will include stencils, rubber stamps and more. It's as if Oprah was sitting in on the class, "One for you and one for you..."

New Tape Goodness

So my passions are my husband, books, paper, trees (forests), tape and pens (and yeah, it's pretty much in that order.) They get my heart a thumpin'. So when I checked out Washimatta's website the other day, my heart started to go all a pitter patter.

Karen's website is here and her etsy shop is here. I've been ordering from her for years and she is my Go To Person for Washi Tape. I usually have my orders shipped via EMS shipping (with the way my mail is, I need the insurance on it.) I ordered it and had it here in FOUR days (from Japan!!!) I can't recommend Karen enough (I don't get a kick back or anything special for saying this. Like Horton, "I mean what I say and I said what I meant..." She's a one woman business and I hope she continues selling us sticky goodness for a long time!)

Tape fans may enjoy this:

You'll find me at Stampin from the Heart today. I'm really looking forward to it (I'll be back there Friday and Saturday teaching a NEW two day class!)

New Books, Magazines and Zines

It's a well known fact that I am a sucker for a good looking book. With the good ones, I'm tempted and teased until I give in (though I don't always give in. I've passed quite a few new books on by lately.) The three shown in the photo here, however, I couldn't pass up:

Bough Down by Karen Green

The Purple Book by Hyland and Lewis

Kawaii! Japan's Culture of Cute by Okazaki and Johnson

These just arrived yesterday and I haven't had a chance to read them yet. So while I can't offer you a real review of any of them, I have flipped through each several times and they entice me enough to know that I want to keep them. I know that they may not be for everyone but they definitely piqued my interest!

As far as the magazines go, I've been stalking Darling at Skylight Books for over a month now. I'd call once a week (I told you, I'm a book/magazine stalker!) and I practically jumped up and down when I was told that it was finally on the shelf! It's issue #3 (I wish I could get a copy of #1 to hold in my hands) and it's gorgeous, as always. I can't wait to dive in.

Another Escape is a new magazine. The subtitle, "A Creative Exploration" and several flip throughs made me decide that I needed to give it a test run.

I have all of the Doris Zines and I absolutely love them. Check out Cindy's work here and her blog here.

I have seen Yumi's work before at Skylight and today I finally couldn't resist picking up a zine. I am really looking forward to seeing more of her work.

What new books have you picked up lately that inspire you?

12 April 2013 Journal Page

Sometimes it's the simple pages that mean so much. These pages are some perfect examples as to what I meant before about using large (8 1/2 x 11") focal images and making them work on the smaller 4 1/4 x 5 3/4" pages. I also played around with tearing the images down to fit the page and then collaging right on top of them. It's all good.

I have a new book post coming up soon. New washi (yes, I mean REAL washi) tapes, too. It may not be until next week but very soon. Prep your wallets. You've been warned.

11 April 2013 Journal Page

One of the many things that I loved about working in this journal was being able to use a wide variety of images. I didn't go out of my way to find the perfect size image to fit the smaller pages. If it was large and I wanted to use it, I did.

One of the things that some of my regular students laugh about is my repeated use of the phrase, "Make it work." I was saying it before Tim Gunn (sorry, Tim!) and I'm sure I'm not the only one to ever use it (LOL!!!) Seriously, it's your journal. If you are itching to use something, USE IT! TRY IT! It's not brain surgery. You're not building a space ship. You don't like it? Push yourself to make it better until you can't push any more. Then move along. You've got a whole book to fill.

If you're interested in signing up for my NYC classes at The Ink Pad next month, there's been some changes with the schedule. I will now be teaching one class Saturday afternoon (3-7) and TWO classes on Sunday. You can find more information here.  I have a detailed blog post with samples and descriptions here.

A quick reminder that I have two classes scheduled this month at Stampin from the Heart. The first, joie de vivre is coming up this Sunday! Then I have a two day class May 31st and June 1st. More info here. Samples are in the store and I hope to see you there!

Becoming: The Art of Visual Dialogue (a special two day class)

The Classes in Detail:
 Joie de Vivre
It's been said that "the eyes are the windows of your soul." Your art journal is a window to your thoughts, dreams and passions.
In this four hour workshop we will be focusing on creating a unique, collaged book with a variety of different sized and appropriately placed windows. Learn how to tell your own story as you explore a myriad of collage and journaling techniques. Be prepared for lots of layering and self expression in this workshop! I loved working in this book and so will you!
Supply list: X-acto knife and cutting mat, Scissors, small selection of favorite collage ephemera, bone folder, cork back metal ruler, roll of waxed paper, roll of paper towels OR an old rag, permanent black inkpad,  1" brush to glue (I like chip or bristle brushes), a few of your favorite glue sticks, an old catalog or magazine to glue on (if you don't want to use all of your waxed paper for this.)
Little Love Notes: Triptych Book Revised and Revisited I've revised and revisited different formats of my extremely popular Triptych Book class since I first taught it at Artfest in 2001. This has to be my most favorite version of the book.

You will create a book where the pages swing out door-like. Explore using a variety of different mediums and materials as you work your way through the pages. Learn a variety of new and unique methods in self expression as you work in your book.

This book has pushed me to think and step outside of my box. I will be pushing you in the same way in class (and you will love it!) Be
prepared to step out of your comfort zone and have a heck of a good time doing so.

Supply list: Scissors, small selection of favorite collage ephemera, bone folder, cork back metal ruler, roll of waxed paper, roll of paper towels OR an old rag, permanent black inkpad,  1" brush to glue (I like chip or bristle brushes), a few of your favorite glue sticks, an old catalog or magazine to glue on (if you don't want to use all of your waxed paper for this.)

Becoming: The Art of Visual Dialogue (a special two day class)
I am extremely excited about this workshop. My mind is brimming over with ideas, tips, tricks and techniques that I am eager to share with you.

In this rare two day class we will be working in an extremely unique way. If you are looking to push yourself as an artist, this is the class that you want to take. If you want to step outside of your comfort zone and explore new ideas and methods of working, this is the book for you
We will start by working LARGE exploring a variety of techniques. As you work, you will learn how to push aside your inner critic as you create rich layers of texture, color and self expression. We'll step back and create a portfolio journal from scratch that will bind and hold not only your pages but other possibilities as well!

Now we dive back onto the pages we started earlier to create fresh, new pages. Learn how to develop a keen eye at how you look and see your work as well as the work of others. We'll be exploring a myriad of journal and collage tips, tricks, techniques and ideas; fixing so called mistakes; learning how to "see" by pulling out colors, shapes and patterns and learning how to create visually stunning, deeply rich personal pages.

This truly is unlike any other class that I have ever offered. You will be learning process as you create your own unique product (a visual journal!) Learn how to dialogue in your journal and how to make your pages work for you.

I hope to see YOU there!

Happy Birthday AND Happy Retirement, Mom!

Daddy and Mom Christmas on Franklin St, Braintree, MA
Thinking of my Mom today. She may kill me for posting some of these photos here, but to me they are the perfect representation of what life in my family was like: lots of love, family, good times and friends. Looking at them makes me smile (and in some cases, laugh out loud.)

Today marks a major milestone in my Mom's life: in exactly one hour and four minutes (as I write this), she will clock out of the Post Office in Quincy, Massachusetts for the last time. To say that she's been looking forward to this for some time now is an understatement. At the same time, to say that she's also not worried would be a lie. Retirement is a major life change and she knows it.

The last year without my Dad has been extremely difficult for all of us but especially for my Mom. My Dad was there (for all of us) in many ways that we never even thought of until after he was gone. In the past year, my Mom has grown to be stronger and more independent. Sure, she has her ups and downs (like we all do) and there isn't a day that goes by where she doesn't think of my Dad. He would be very proud of her and how far she's come. We're all very proud of her.

Happy birthday, Mom! Happy Retirement! Today I'm thinking of all of the times we visited you at the post office. Walking around the lake with you in Jamaica Plain, trips up and down Centre Street while waiting for you to finish your route, Tristan getting all excited at seeing your big mail truck ("big truck!"), waiting for you at Dunkin Donuts, your many comments of how you had to change before we went ANYWHERE because you wouldn't be caught dead in your uniform, etc... I know that the post office was a lot of hard work but I also know how much you loved your customers and how much they loved you. You went above and beyond the call many times. You made some good friends and many memories.

We love you. Daddy would be proud.
