"Many of us have made our world so familiar that we do not see it anymore. An interesting question to ask yourself at night is, "What did I really see this day?"

Late Night at the Studio

Almost twelve hours later and there are three of us left working in our books. A good Saturday night.

What I'm Reading

I stopped at Barnes and Noble in Gilroy and found Flow (L.A. still didn't have it when I checked Wednesday.) Re-reading Tristine Rainer's The New Diary and loving the W.H. Auden book. Not much time for reading this weekend but I hope to get in a few pages late at night.

Leaving for class soon. I'm spoiled that I'm staying with Maria and the studio is only a few minutes away. Really looking forward to it.

All set up for my classes in Fremont. Looking forward to the weekend!!!! It looks too clean now.

(You can't see the collage stuff but there are two full tables!)

An Unfinished Page

I'm leaving for Fremont in the morning. Really looking forward to the trip up there. No Berkeley this time (sob) but it's okay as I'm saving my pennies for NYC next month! I prepped some extra supplies in case of any last minute sign-ups. I hope to see you soon!

The above page is a rare, unfinished page. I think I started it and then had to send the sample off before I could finish it. There's also one blank page in the book. I'll have to finish it when I have it in my hands again (it's in Connecticut now.)

Blog Love:
FYI, if you're near a Blick, you may want to check to see if they have gallons of Liquitex Gloss Gel Medium on sale. I picked up two gallons for $15 yesterday at the store on Beverly in Los Angeles.

My Compass

I apologize for the glare on this photo. I'd take a new photo but the book is living in Connecticut until next month.

I'm almost finished with prep work for my Fremont classes. I still have some paper to tear, paint to buy and collage sheets to print out. I'm looking forward to seeing some familiar (and new) faces this coming weekend.

Thoughts on a Sunday

"Art is a form of therapy. Sometimes I wonder how all those who do not write, compose, or paint can escape the madness, the melancholia, the panic-fear inherent in the human situation." -Graham Greene

Folded Out

Here are the last few pages folded out. This book is living at The Great American Stamp Store in Connecticut until late June when I teach the class there!

Spending this afternoon tearing a lot of paper for my East Coast Classes. Slowly but surely it will get done. I always like the deckle edge look as much as possible. I don't know if my Mom's mailman is going to like me when I ship all of this paper to Massachusetts next week!

Speaking of upcoming classes, Saturday's class in Fremont is almost sold out. Don't wait too long as space is limited. I'm really looking forward to teaching several new classes there.

Folks have asked about the paper that I'm using lately. I buy from Kelly Paper (no affiliation!) My favorite paper is still the 140 Neenah Exact Index (Neenah bought out the Wausau paper mills.) I've been using Accent Opaque Digital Cover Stock in various heavy weights. It's difficult for me to order the Neenah Paper as Kelly Paper wants me to buy a case and I just don't have the room (tiny apartment) to store that much paper. It's also heavy as hell. Accent Opaque Cover is a good substitute and now it's available in a variety of different heavy weights.

What I'm Reading

When I'm not prepping for my upcoming workshops, working in my journal or writing hand-outs, I'll be reading these:

New Artisans II
Creativity & Madness: Psychological Studies of Art & Artists Volume 2 (Volume 1 is on the way.)
Joanna Field's (aka Marion Milner) A Life of One's Own (rereading this one)

My Day at The Getty

When I found out that they had a Van Gogh on display, I knew we couldn't leave without seeing it. Van Gogh is one of my top favorite artists and I could've sat in front of his painting all day.

The Impressionists' exhibit was stunning. These are some of my favorites that we saw.

Also very interesting to note who signed their paintings on the front and whose signatures (Turner) were missing.

It was a long day but a good day. We had to leave early as Tristan had to attend a Senior Awards Show where he was awarded High Honors in Art and Outstanding Honors in French. Definitely a damn good day!

'We're so proud of Tristan! He was awarded High Honors in Visual Arts (he has the *best* teacher!) as well Outstanding Student Award in French.'

A Closer Look at My Summer 2015 Classes

Here is my list of classes for Summer 2015.
I'm ALWAYS looking for new teaching venues so if you know of any that may be interested, I'd love to hear. I have taught at stores, museums, schools, backyards, garages, studios and private homes. I also am available for teaching home schooling art classes.
My workshops are always process-based learning while creating a unique product. I am well known for not traveling light and bring a large variety of supplies including (but not limited to) collage material, rubber stamps, stencils, pens, markers, tape and more.
Please note the small supply list for each class.
If you're not near where I'll be teaching, but you're interested in taking a class, I do offer a variety of online classes (27 different online workshops as of March 2015.) You can find out more info on the right side of my main blog.

Thank YOU for your interest!

Cleaning House: Mixed Media Supplies

If you like my work, you will love these grab bags as everything is from my personal stash that I have been collecting for a time now. These are limited and once they're gone, I won't be making any more of these any time soon.

What you will find in one grab bag:
3 rolls of paper and/or washi tapes
3 pens/markers
2 stencils
2 transparency sheets (from Hambly who are long out of business)
1 of my collage sheets
at least five rubber stamps (all different sizes and all artsy!)
some surprises

Each grab bag is different and has well over $75 worth of supplies in it.

11 January 2015 Journal Page

It's a quiet Saturday here. I baked both chocolate chip bread (think muffins but in bread form) for me and Tristan and banana bread for David. I'm going to spend time today destashing supplies (I hope to have supply grab bags of tape, pens, stamps, etc listed on Monday), listening to old time radio, reading, walking and art making. I hope that your Saturday is a good one.

What I'm Reading: Frida Kahlo and Wim Wenders

I'm spending my weekend in Frida Kahlo's Garden and deep in conversation with Wim Wenders.

I wish. Thankful for the books that allow our minds to wander and dream.

Very happy that David found our copy of, "Wim Wenders: On Film." I had Wenders sign it when we met him at Book Soup (that was a dream come true!) Wenders asked me if I had read it and I was embarrassed when I had to answer no. When we got home, the book was put in a "safe place" and thankfully, David found it the other day! I've already read several chapters and am having a hard time putting it down.

I think of the many people we've met over the years and Wenders always stands out. He had a genuine interest in talking to us and I will always appreciate him for that (not to mention his many films and books.)

I'm excited to visit New York City this summer. I'll only be there for a day but I can't wait to see the Frida exhibit at the Botanical Gardens. My morning and afternoon will be spent there and in the evening, I'll be at The Ink Pad. Definitely an ideal day.

10 January 2015 Journal Page

One of the things that I encourage my students to do after making art is to put their work away and revisit it in a day. Ask questions about what you like (or don't like) about a piece. Don't compare it to someone else's work, only your own. Have you said everything you need to? See how your work feels and speaks to *you* before you move on.

An Update

Yay! The order is in from the printer. I apologize for the delay. They've been crazy busy there. I started binding the Visual Poetry books last night as soon as I arrived home with them. I managed to stitch half of them. I'm teaching today but as soon as I get home, I will work hard to bind the rest of them. After that, I will sign everything and pack them up. I am eager to get them to the post office and in your hands. I'll post again when they ship. Thanks for your patience.

Thinking of my parents today on their anniversary. This was their wedding song:

What I'm Reading

I've had A Year with Rilke on my wishlist for what seems like ages. I'm glad I finally found this jewel of a book. It's full of little nuggets from a wide range of Rilke's writings.

I also started reading Frida Kahlo: The Gisele Freund Photographs and I absolutely love it! The title is misleading as there is also a lot about Diego in here, as well. If you enjoy peeking into the lives and studios of artists, this is definitely one you'll want to check out.
