NEW: The Art Life Workshop: Painting by the Season Virtual Workshop, Classroom, Library, Art Resources and Community Taught by Kelly Kilmer

Take a video tour of some of the work taught in January in  The Art Life: Painting by the Season

Painting by the Season is like eating by the seasons: you are inspired by the colors, images and things that surround you. It is embracing the every day and learning from it.

In The Art Life, you will look to the seasons in all forms for ideas and inspiration. (Think: color palettes, themes, shapes and much, much more.) You will also learn about other artists and how they are guided by nature and the world around them.

If you paint according to the season, you will have a minimum of one painting a week. After one year, you will have 52 paintings plus full sketchbooks of drawings, paintings, studies and writings.

  • The Art Life is here for you to dip in and out of. You can pick and choose what you participate in. You do not have to read or partake in every lesson/session/offering. I'm keeping the price low to make it accessible to more people.
  • Everything that is in The Art Life Workshop Library from 2022 will remain there for you to access (about 100 videos and counting at the moment.)
  • New material EVERY month to build your skills!

Be inspired with images, new color palette ideas & MORE.

Our focus:

Please note, these lessons can be used by artists with (or without) collage for representational work or abstract.

  • Drawing. Everyone can draw. You just have to learn how. It absolutely is not a talent but an acquired skill.
  • Painting. My emphasis is on encouraging you to paint. It's also to encourage you to learn the foundation of what it takes to make a painting.
  • Writing. Writing is an integral part of the art making process. Learn techniques on how to incorporate writing into your own practice.

Learn how to use these mediums (along with mixed media techniques) to feed and guide your creative journey.

The Workshop Structure:

*Can't make the live sessions?
Everything (except our salons) is recorded.

  • Weekly, live, one hour painting workshop* (every Friday morning 11 a.m. PST)
  • Once a month: two hour live painting workshop* (February 12th 10 a.m. to Noon PST)
  • Two 2 hour salons: Time to demo, ask questions, mentoring, accountability check in, sharing, community (usually two weekend days per month 10 a.m. to Noon PST) Bonus two hour salon on Monday, February 20th. Yes, THREE salons in February!
  • Weekly prompts (art/drawing/writing/mixed media)
  • Additional Live Sessions, Videos and Writings Explaining the Core, Fundamental Principles of Art: Value, Color Theory, and MORE.
  • Art Critiques: where we learn how to look at and talk about art. Art critiques are NOT about tearing the artist or the work apart. Learn how to look at, think and talk about art. Art critiques will give you the ability to talk and think about your own work: how to see it and improve it. Build and encourage artistic confidence.

My lessons are not paint by numbers exercises.

My goal is to offer thoughts, techniques and ideas that strengthen, encourage, feed and stimulate your art making practice in a community setting.

The Art Life Workshop: Painting by the Seasons is designed to encourage art making as a life long practice.

Don't have time to paint on a regular basis? TAL: PBTS will have short, creative, regular bursts to keep you engaged, stimulated and inspired.

Just the idea of a seasonal palette is extremely exciting to me.

In what format will we be working?

I will encourage you to work in the manner that is best for you, but also to be open to change and new ideas of working.

  • A regular written studio journal
  • An ongoing sketchbook: paintings, mixed media, drawings, studies, etc... We will use this book to FEED our weekly, finished paintings and to spark future ideas.
  • Weekly painting studies
  • A once a month finished painting (this month's lesson is the window and curtain at the very top! Collage is optional and I will give you ideas on how to incorporate it in the lesson.)

What supplies will I need?

Use the supplies that you already have. Learn to use those tools to gain skills and build confidence.

  • A sketchbook/journal: for paintings, mixed media studies, drawings, notes, idea generating, studies, color theory lessons and more.
  • Favorite writing tool
  • Substrates of choice (paper, wood, mdf panels, canvas, cardboard from boxes, etc...) If you can paint on it, save it and use it.
  • Pencils for drawing (use what you have.)
  • Media of choice and favorite basic tools (I am using acrylic, brushes, palette knives, etc...)
  • Favorite drawing tools (pencils to crayons.)
  • Optional: a journal/paper to clean brushes. Before I dip my brushes in water to clean them, I wipe off excess paint on scrap paper. You could use this scrap paper to create additional work.
  • Optional: Collage materials. You may choose to collage the surface before beginning your painting. We will be discussing different ways to do this in the coming months.

The Art Life Workshop: Painting by the Seasons begins on the 1st of every month. Members have access to a full month of material (the 1st of the month to the last day of the month OR you can subscribe and never miss a thing!)

The Art Life Workshop is an ongoing evolution. It will change, grow and evolve just as we do.

I am very excited about this new journey. I hope that you are, too!
