Inner Dialogue: the Art of Visual Expression

Want to create magic on your journal pages?

For most artists, paper, paint, mark making and journaling represent doorways to new experiences and insights. Most artists that I know are always trying to discover and learn something new. We’re eager for new ideas, new techniques, anything that will get us in the studio and working.

I want to start a fire in you! I want journaling to be rich, magical, expressive and unlike any other form of creating that you can do. How do we do that? By working, brainstorming and taking risks.

You will create a one of a kind hardcover journal (with a hidden paper pocket) that will call to you whenever you are ready to reach for the scissors or paintbrush.

Discover new ideas and possibilities in art making that are already nestled deep within you. Expand, explore and experiment and bring your inner artist out and onto your pages.
Supply list: an apron, scissors, a small selection of favorite collage ephemera (think about reading this when choosing your images and papers), baby wipes, cork back metal ruler, a full roll of paper towels OR old rags, a container for your paint water, your favorite paint brushes, a water brush pen (OR an extra fine, detail paint brush *ONLY* IF you have one),  a few of your favorite LARGE glue sticks (please trust me when I say that large glue sticks will last you longer. I always have two or three 40 gram glue sticks in my journal bag and that's more than enough for a long weekend. You WILL go through the smaller glue sticks in MINUTES), roll of waxed paper OR an old catalog or magazine to glue on (if you don't want to use all of your waxed paper for this.)

Finger Painting for Grown-ups: A Sensory Delight
3-7 p.m.

I've been CAPTIVATED with using my paint markers* lately to do more than just write, draw, color and make marks with. This isn't just basic finger painting for adults using paint markers. This will take your work and how you think about creativity to an entirely new level.

Journey deep into a hands-on realm of luscious color, exploratory layers and expressive journal pages. BYO journal and a sense of play to this fun, new workshop. Explore layers of paper, paint and pen using a plethora of NEW creative techniques and playful exploration. Learn how to use your fingers (and other tools) to manipulate layers of color and textures. Using paint markers and your fingers to push and layer paint around on the page is an entirely different experience than painting with acrylics and brushes. It can be messy at first, but once mastered, it's a way to achieve newfound freedom in your work!

I have been obsessed about the freedom and creative possibilities offered in this workshop. Be prepared to play, expand upon your creativity toolbox and to laugh.

I have taught this workshop multiple times and students have always raved about it. Students who were on the fence before have later confessed, "This is my new favorite thing to do!"

Learn how to gain freedom in art making. We'll also talk about how to create on the go art using your journal and a few paint markers. We'll leave no idea uncapped after this intensive, colorful and messy workshop!

*Water Based Paint Markers: Sharpie, Posca, Holbein, Molotow, Montana, etc... (these are acrylic, water based paint markers.)

If you have them (and if you don't, I will!) please bring water based paint markers (even ones that won't write but have gobs of paint still left in them!) Also fun are refills for water based paint markers that you haven't used in ages and I'll share how to use them (instead of leaving them to dry up or tossing them. Again, I will have them if you don't! So, please don't fret if you don't have water based paint markers or their refills. Do NOT go out and buy paint markers for this workshop! I am known for NOT traveling light to my workshops!)

Supply list:  your journal, apron, water based paint markers and refills (see above comment), mini 01 catalyst tool, a colour shaper (Ranger makes inexpensive ones) and palette knife (ONLY if you have them, I will have extras to share), baby wipes, an apron, scissors, a small selection of your favorite collage ephemera (think about reading this when choosing your images and papers), cork back metal ruler, a full roll of paper towels OR old rags, your favorite paint brushes, a few of your favorite glue sticks (please trust me when I say that large glue sticks will last you longer.

Soliloquy in Art Journal Form

Some of the things that make me very happy include making my own journal from scratch, falling in love with said journal and exploring new ideas, techniques and thoughts on the pages of said journal. I know that I am not alone in these thoughts (or else you wouldn't be reading this.)

Art journaling is a dialogue with yourself in the form of paper, paint and pen.  It's a chance to express, explore and experiment with your thoughts and ideas on paper. It's a chance to play. I often think of my journal work as having a conversation with myself as well as the world around me.

In this day long workshop, we will create an expanded journal (with hidden pockets.) After creating our new book, we will dive onto the pages exploring rich and personal journal pages. Learn new techniques as you create your own unique pages using collage, paint, pens and much, much more.

Spend several hours engrossed in a world of layers, color, composition and self expression. Come create with us in a space that is safe, nurturing, fun (and often very funny) and full of ideas guaranteed to get your creative juices flowing.

Supply list: an apron, baby wipes, scissors, a small selection of favorite collage ephemera (think about reading this when choosing your images and papers), cork back metal ruler, a full roll of paper towels OR old rags, a container for your paint water, your favorite paint brushes,  a few of your favorite glue sticks (please trust me when I say that large glue sticks will last you longer. Beyond the Brush: Painting with Palette Knives and More

We all have our favorite tools. After all, what artist doesn’t love a good paintbrush? What about other art tools like palette knives, catalyst tools and even household items?

I’ve fallen head over heels painting with tools that aren’t brushes. After this workshop, you will, too!

Moving beyond the brush opens us up to new possibilities and discoveries in how we create layers on our pages. Learn how to create new colors on your rich, luscious, unique pages. Gain confidence in exploring new ideas and take the plunge into a world of color.  Learn that creative mistakes are only new possibilities. Bring your journal, some waxed paper and be ready to set off on a whole new adventure in creative painting.

Supply list: Your Journal, painting knives/palette knives (IF you have a favorite), a 01 mini Catalyst tool (only IF you have one...you're going to want one after this workshop), baby wipes, an apron, scissors, a small selection of favorite collage ephemera (think about reading this when choosing your images and papers), cork back metal ruler, a full roll of paper towels OR old rags, a container for your paint water, your favorite paint brushes, a water brush pen (OR an extra fine, detail paint brush *ONLY* IF you have one),  a few of your favorite LARGE glue sticks (please trust me when I say that large glue sticks will last you longer.

We'll begin this workshop by creating several simple no-stitch journals (you get to choose the size you want to work in!) After assembling your book, we'll dive head first into layers of paint, paper and pen. This little book will capture your heart and creative spirit.

You'll have the pages full in no time (there's a good chance that you may finish the collage and painting part in the workshop depending upon the size book you choose to make.)

What I love most about this book is how travel friendly it is. You'll be bringing it to the coffee shop, on road trips and beyond. It's a new friend that you won't want to leave your side.
