Goodbye Google Reader

Some insist that blogs are dead (I'm still hearing it and am tired of hearing it.) Folks who prefer facebook, instagram and other social networking sites to share and gather information. Not me. I love reading my blogs and blogging. I love the personal aspect that blogging brings and I'm not ready to throw in the towel.

Google Reader shuts its doors today and I had been freaking out since I found out about it. I LOVED Google Reader as a way to read and enjoy the four hundred plus blogs that I follow. I've been using Feedly for over a week now and so far, I really enjoy it. It's user friendly (I was able to do most of the work on my three year old phone!) If you used Google Reader you can even import your feeds into Feedly. Other reader options are here. (I don't get a kick back or anything from anyone. I'm just sharing what works for me.)

As always, thanks for reading my blog. You can also subscribe (and receive an email) by looking along the right side of my blog for follow by email. The RSS feed is at the bottom right side of the blog for those of you who have asked.

Heading out with the family for our last full day in Boston for a bit. Looking forward to a good day!

I'm right with you on this, Kelly. I switched, easily, to Feedly a couple of weeks ago when I started to freak out about Blogger...and I have an email thingy to follow me on the right side of my blog. I still wonder what will happen...later today...yikes...to my Followers, but, well, we'll see. I LOVE blogging and reading my big bunch of beautiful blogs. PS. i am really enjoying The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry. I am also loving Creative Thursday. Have you read this by any chance? Hugs to you in Boston! I LOVE Boston, and the North End. Aaaah. Thanks, Kathy!! It will be interesting to see what happens, for sure.
Harold Fry is on my to read list. I'm reading the autobiography of Luis Bunuel right now. I love Creative Thursday. Great blog and book.

Hope your summer vacation is going well. You deserve it!!!

Hi Kelly,

It was a very dark day for me when I found out Google Reader was going away. My reaction was not unlike a toddler when you take away their blankie.

Google Reader allowed me to keep up with almost 200 blogs. It was easy to read on every device. I am ADDICTED to reading blogs and it's funny to see how my tastes have evolved over the years. Started out heavy into decor blogs and in the last 3 years more heavily into artist's blogs.

As soon as the news came down from Google I immediately imported my stuff into Feedly. Almost every blogger I follow recommended Feedly, but I struggled. It didn't look right, didn't sort right and frankly it just didn't feel right. Finally a week ago I decided to try Bloglovin. So much better for me! I still haven't figured out how to import my starred items from google reader (although I have 'archived' them).

Honestly I wouldn't know what to do everyday if I didn't have my blogs to read. It used to be that tv shows were my best friends. Now I can definitely say bloggers are my besties! LOL.

Faithfully yours,
Kimberly

Thanks, Kimberly! I tried bloglovin but didn't like it *for me*. I always say it's always about finding what works best for you. Glad you found something!!! :)

Blogs are dead!? No way! I love reading and following blogs, like you I'm using Feedly on my kindle, in the options you can set it to card view which I.Love! It's just like reading a magazine full of my favourite artists! Blogging will never die, people always need a creative outlet to express themselves.

Blogs are dead? Never. Myth brought to us by the same folks who say PayPal is on its way out, or those who claimed minidisks would overrun CDs. I don't think so.

FYI I am using The Old Reader, after being with Feedly for about six months. TOR is way better than Feedly, rather like a clone of Google Reader, plus you can export your blogs from there to elsewhere. You can't currently export from Feedly. I.E., once you've moved there, if you decide to move on you'll have to rebuild your list of blogs from scratch.
Kelly, I agree that blogs are not dead. People have a need to express themselves in more than a few words! I love reading about people's lives - blogs are like personal journals and diaries - love them!

THANK YOU! for this post! I have been so very busy that I had completely forgotten about the deadline. After reading your post, with one click, I converted the Google Reader acct. on my computer to Feedly on my way out the door, and once I got to my morning destination, with a lightening quick app install and one click to import, I have my entire Google Reader readable from my iPhone's Feedly app as well. I absolutely would have missed the deadline if you hadn't posted! Thanks again! So much!

that was a rumor started by people who do not blog. No way are they dead. i switched to Freedly last week for my PC and this week added Bloglovin to my iPad as they sent me an app advertisement just at the moment I realized I needed one for the iPad. Blogger dashboard has a reading list that is still there and I like that format. It does loose things. Freedly and Bloglovin are both easy reads and picked up Google reader.

I switch you Kelly to FB when this was announced as your posting there is usually the same and an easy jump to your blog and it is easier to comment on FB

Love reading people's blogs. Love the community that reads mine. I opened up a new email account and then went through all the blogs I read and converted them to email notification. I now have all my blogs on QuinnReader, which may not be as good as Feedly, but it won't leave me in a lurch.

Thanks for the Feedly review. I adopted it and added it to my Toolbar. Glad you're coming back safe and sound and that you had a good visit. I've been talking to Sharon and have decided going to CA in October is too expensive right now. My car needs repairs before I can drive it again but I don't have the funds for it yet.

Thanks for sharing those! I read your blog everyday, and I keep up with approximately 5 daily. Others I pop in whenever.

I live on Facebook almost, but see it and use it in a totally different way to blogs. I love my blog and follow so many that I struggle to keep up with them.
