I didn't disappear completely though I kinda want to at the moment...

not because of anyone or anything in my little art world, but because A. I might have to go to jury duty a week from Monday and this scares the hell out of me (have I bitched about this enough yet)? and B. My Effing Evil Landlord is coming for an "Inspection" with some Unknown Mysterious Company either on Tuesday or Wednesday of this week. We have been in this apartment for 12 years-they have never done an inspection except ONCE on the SMOKE DETECTORS -to make sure that the batteries were in. Yup. That was once. They wouldn't listen to me either when I told them that my Grandfather was a Boston firefighter and you bet your ass, those smoke detectors work. Any ways, they are supposedly "inspecting" the whole building (I reiterate-first time EVER) for what, we don't know. I don't like them in here. I always feel extremely violated when they come in here. They usually just stand in my living room and look at all of our stuff and that makes me nuts. Those of you who rent may understand how I feel.

Last night we had to go pay a visit to Iliad bookstore in North Hollywood and it wasn't just to see Zola, the one eyed pirate kitty (arrrrrrh!) Can I just tell you that David walked out with nothing yet I came away with several Lynda Barry books for him to put under the Christmas tree for me? I also found this wonderful children's book called The Rainbow Book by Samuil Marshak and illustrated by
Mai Miturich. I fell in love with the illustrations in it. That went into the pile for under the tree.

We hadn't been in the store but maybe 3 minutes when David says "Have you seen this?" The Complete Universe of Dupuy & Berberian. Ummmm, noooooo. Never saw that. Don't remember Meltdown or Golden Apple getting it. The original cover price was $55. Scope around on the net. I found it for $40 in English to boot. The drawings and the artwork speak for themselves. Drawn and Quarterly have published some of their work as well.

Next month Drawn and Quarterly is publishing a book called Milk Teeth by Julie Morstad. I am eager to see this one!

I may disappear for a couple of days. I am teaching my color theory class tomorrow (Sunday) at Paper Post in Agoura. Tomorrow night and Monday will be spent cleaning. I also have to go to a "talk" with other parents at Tristan's school on Monday about the middle school options we have for this area. I'm a wee bit nervous about middle school for Tristan. I haven't heard that many raves about the public middle schools in the area and it's either public school or try homeschooling him...

Any ways, the Evil Landlord Beings are coming either Tuesday or Wednesday. If you don't hear from me until after their visit, just know that I am cleaning cleaning cleaning!

Beezus, Kelly! I'm paranoid-by-nature, so I'm totally hating the idea about this Unknown Mysterious Co.!

Homeschooling in California is Way Easy...which reminds me, I have to e-mail off the form to make us "legal" once more. Don't let anyone give you any crap with the "socialization argument" -- we live in freakin' Southern California, not on the moon! Although, we are all pretty spacey out here...

Wow, always love the books you recommend...love the illustrations in 'The Rainbow Book'. Great news that Julie Morstad has a book coming out, can't wait to see it.

Oh yes, Kelly, I know about "inspection" - I used to live in an apartment. I have had this done not once but twice, and one time I had to spend two full days cleaning up the apartment so that the inspector won't look at my place as a "fire hazard". And both times the inspection was conducted in my absence - very unnerving. The landlord didn't know about the state inspection (NJ) - when I got the notice from the state, I had to let the landlord know and he was very surprised. Very interesting... &rew
