More Reclaimed: An Artist's Book...

I may have to re-shoot these pictures, but for now, here they are:Tomorrow and Thursday, I will be taking Lynda Barry's fab-o writing class in West L.A. I am a wee bit nervous. The class is all paid for (thanks to my parents and sister as my birthday/Christmas present! woo hoo!)...yet I am feeling guilty for taking it now when life is so roller coastery-ish right now. Nervous and excited at the same time :)

Speaking of Miss Lynda B, here are some online interviews in which you can bask in her groovyness. Here and here.

If you are in L.A., Lynda Barry & Matt Groening will be in conversation at The Hammer TONIGHT (Tuesday).

Anyone else get really pissed at Oprah's "What I Know for Sure?" column in the Holiday issue of O? The article blames the American public for the world's economic problems...saying that it was caused by our "Greed". This month's issue recommends things that are outrageously priced $89 for NINE cupcakes (for $89, I could make enough cupcakes to feed Rhode Island), clothes that go for hundreds and hundreds of dollars, insanely priced make up, etc... Excuse me, who's greedy? It says NOTHING about the damn CEO's, the banks, the mortgage companies, the ones with the real BUCKS whose greed caused the problems in the first place. It really pissed me off. I am thinking of canceling my subscription.

I'm glad I missed that article. It is so easy for someone like her, sitting in her multi-million dollar apartment high above Chicago with no finanical worries to speak of (who probably buys those $89 cupcakes) to blame us the American Public.....that really pisses me off also. I've been unemployed for almost a year now and even when I was making good money I never spend lavishly and would never even dream of buying 9 cupcakes for $89.....

I agree... I subscribed to her magazine when it first came out- I liked it a lot, because it wasn't like the "make-up, thin thighs, and and beauty" articles that most women's magazines are. (It's getting more like that, though.) Her magazine still has some good articles, but that column always makes me mad, because most of her finds are expensive.

First let me say I love your journal pages, they are awesome. And do not feel guilty for taking Lynda's class. You work hard Kelly and you deserve to have some fun too, always remember that. If you're parent's and sister gifted you with this then go and enjoy yourself. Life's too short to worry about everything and you can't take it with you.

Now on to Oprah. I don't subscribe or buy her magazine. I even quit watching her show after a couple of her shows really ticked me off, can't remember which ones they were. I agree she does pick these outlandish things that are so expensive but then she gets on TV and says that we all need to come togehter as a "country" and do something about the economic crisis. Yes we do, quit being so greedy for one thing.

What saddens me the most is that the American public actually listens to Oprah and does what she says like she's the boss or something. Please.....get a brain people and think for yourself. I really used to like her, now I think her fame has gone to her head.

I hope you have fun at your class. :D

I have my December O mag but haven't gotten to that page yet. If she truly believes that it's amercican greed that has caused all of this then she has a lot to do with promoting it. I gave up watching her show when I saw her in an expensive convertible with Bono hitting the stores of Chicago buying thousands and thousands of dollars worth of items. They were promoting the RED campaign where a portion of the proceeds would go to Bono's charities in Africa. I believe in that but i felt like throwing up watching her buy multiple items at $150 a piece like it were candy. I can't even think to buy one item at $100 without breaking my budget.....
That was the last time I watched her show-about 2 years ago.

Kelly, are you really taking that writing class? How cool! She's awesome. But, so are you. I look forward to reading what you 'write'!

Great pages, here.

I'm not much of an O fan, but I am going to go read the article. Thanks for the head's up.

Well, Ive been saying this for a long time..."I think Oprah is the anti-christ!" I used to watch her show when she had on some really open-minded spirituality segments. But after a while I just thought she got weirder and weirder...and not in a good way! I have never purchased her magazine and never will. A friend of mine subscribes and she talks about it like it's the Bible. She is constantly quoting from it and it gets a little old after a while.
Anyhoo...Oprah is one of the richest people in the world. How dare she blame us poor suckers who are just trying to make ends meet and maybe have a little left over for some art supplies and a class every once in a while. Shame on her!

Well...that felt good! Thanks for giving me an excuse to vent about her.

By the way, Miss Kelly, NEVER feel guilty about taking a class! We all need to learn from those around us. It helps to broaden our artistic (and sometimes, our personal) horizons. Enjoy!

Re: Oprah: I am so on your side. Her magazine suggests outlandishly expensive products and then talks about American greed . It's not the first time. She has gone down this road before and I think she is just one of these outrageously rich folks who has no clue whatsoever about what life for the rest of us is really about. You can bet she has no idea about trying to make a dollar stretch to cover the groceries and how abosolutely ridiculous $89 cupcakes sound to the rest of us.

Now Lynda Barry is real people. wonderful lady. I loved her book, her presentation here in St. Louis and everything about her. You are going to have a blast in her class. Ha...tell her about the cupcakes. she'll sing you a song !!!!

Kelly - I love your journal pages! They are so inspiring. As for a comment to O Magazine - I stopped reading that years ago. I became so disgusted with the articles and the way she portrayed Americans, not everyone is rich like her. I haven't watched her show for years either. Keep up with the commentary - I love it.
Hugs.
