An Evening with Maira and Alex Kalman Presenting Sara Berman's Closet at the Skirball Museum or How I Learned to Mix a Cezanne Grey

Maira takes her family around the gallery. One lady exclaimed to me, "THIS! This is my Auntie's closet. Can you believe it?"

Some memorable moments from the evening:

Being two steps in front of Maira Kalman and her family as they toured Sara Berman's closet together. The stories she told!

Entering the auditorium and handed given postcards with quotes and drawings on them by Maira and Alex Kalman as well as moderator Paul Holdengraber!

Paul Holdengraber was an added bonus! I love listening to his NYPL podcast and was VERY excited to hear that he had moved to Los Angeles only two days prior to start a new venture.

Freshly baked sesame cookies on the table (after peeking at Sara's cookie press in her closet.)

A Garbo book in her closet.

Maira reaching into her pocket during the conversation and taking out a piece of paper. On the piece of paper were two things: a quote from Cezanne (I wasn't quick enough to write it down but I am searching for it.) As well as the recipe for Cezanne grey: Yellow Ochre. Ultramarine. White. Black. (I ran to the art store the next day before I trekked North to teach.)

Alex Kalman is very, very funny.

Seeing Maira's paintings without the text on them.

Seeing Maira's handwriting on the wall.

A clip from "Top Hat" opening the evening.

The small chair.

Everyone leaves somewhere.
Everyone leaves everyone.
And there you go.
