I had totally forgotten that this was coming out until I spotted it at Skylight Books in Los Feliz tonight:

Sister Corita Kent was another artist who made a profound inspiration on me growing up.

Growing up in Boston I was always passing by the big gas tank that had her artwork on it. I loved looking at it. I remember (and have) the "Love" Postage stamp that she designed. I can't remember how old I was when I saw her artwork and learned the name "Corita". I do remember how happy I was when an extremely big hearted online artist gifted me with a copy of Learning By Heart (which had long been out of print and very hard to get ahold of). It's now a book that if I spy a copy of it reasonably priced I will gift friends with it. I could've sworn I had it in hardcover and paperback but I think I now only have the PB copy. Ce La Vie.

One of my favorite bookstore owners whenever she sees me she says she thinks of Sister Corita. That made me smile when she told me. Her Learning By Heart is an amazing treasure trove of the various things that she believed and taught at Immaculate College. She's one of those people that you really wish were still around today (she died when I was 12) to sit and talk to.

I am ecstatic that there is a new book out of her work (and teachings, though not as profound as Learning By Heart), Come Alive! (by Julie Ault) is high on my wish list. (sorry I can't link it...amazon is not cooperating at the moment). It is full of her artwork in full, vibrant color. What also is interesting about it is the photos of L.A. in the '60s-vibrant and colorful.

There is also a DVD out
Teaching and Celebrations (available from corita.org/) that I am hoping to order one of these days.

From today's (Friday, April 6th, 2007) Democracy Now show. This made me nuts! Listen to the story of a 27 year old man who has TB. He lives in a hospital "Cell". He has no contact with the outside world (albeit doctors and nurses). Sheriff's deputies took away his computer, tv, radio, telephone (he only can use a payphone). The lights are on in the room 24 hours. He is always under surveillance. They won't even let him take a shower!

Kelly, my daughter had told me about Robert Daniels (the young man with TB) a few days ago.

We are outraged, sickened and frightened about how he is being treated.

This is just WRONG!

Learning by Heart is being reprinted in a teacher-friendly format.
This new edition will include an additional section of four-color prints, examples of children's work and a reference section that links specific exercises to the National Standards in art and academics.
