Roasted Butternut Squash on a Bed of Kale and Spinach

This is another part of my series in the segment now known as, "This Is Not Turning Into a Food Blog".

Every now and then, someone asks me to share a favorite recipe, so here it is!

Ingredients
Olive Oil
Water (for the rice)
Brown Rice (follow the directions for water to rice ratio. I used a half of a cup of rice and a cup of water.)
Kale (chopped into bits)
Baby Spinach
Onions
Tomatoes
Butternut Squash
Vegetable Broth (1/2 cup)

Preheat your oven to 400°

Chop up the veggies while the oven is heating up. You can add any vegetable to this dish. I forgot to buy flax seed and almonds, as I would've added those!

Place cut up squash into a cooking pan. Lightly drizzle with olive oil. If desired, add onions.

Roast for 20 minutes at 400° or until a fork can slide easily in and out of it.

In a pan, place the vegetable broth and kale. Cover and simmer on low . I try to simmer until all of the broth evaporates but sometimes that doesn't happen so I drain the kale.

In a pan, add the water and rice. Cover. Low heat. Stir occasionally. The water should evaporate completely when the rice is done.

Wash and drain the spinach.

When everything is cooked, place spinach and kale down first, then add rice and veggies.

I had fun with this two page spread in my Wanderlust Journal. I used micro glue dots to attach the pink skeleton leaf. Unfortunately the dots stayed tacky, so I went over it with a piece of script tape (made by o check). It's still fragile and sits above the page but it's okay.

I'm often asked if I seal my pages. Nope. Nope and nope. For several reasons:

-Living in Southern California, it gets very hot in my apartment. I have had pages with gel medium on the front stick so now I only put glue on the back (these days I've been using a glue stick which obviously only goes on the back.) I make sure that not only do I use enough glue but I also burnish it with a rag or paper towel.

-I'm lazy. Covering the page means more glue and more work.

-I like the texture of all of the different layers peeking through. I wouldn't get that if I encased the page with gel medium.

-Spray fixatives are toxic. I like to read labels. I also would like to keep the brain cells I have left.

If you're working in a closed book, it should be fine. I've made a plethora of books and have yet to have problems.

If you're working on something that will be exposed (like the cover or a canvas), I recommended using gel medium (regular gel in gloss finish from Nova Color is my favorite.) Make sure that you let the glue underneath dry first. If it's still wet, it will feel cold to the touch. When it's dry, brush a really thin layer of gel medium keeping the brush strokes in one direction. If desired, you can apply more layers just make sure to let each one dry completely before adding the next one.

I don't have any pen or book reviews to share with you today. I only have me and one of my journal pages.

I am all prepped and ready for my Passionate Declarations class this Sunday at Stampin from the Heart. I am looking forward to seeing the gang there as it feels like I haven't seen them since last year. Oh, wait... In addition to seeing some familiar faces, I hope to see some new ones, too!

Finished working on my Wanderlust class today. I've been showing you pages from this journal since mid December (the page you see above is from this journal.) The pages fold up, down and out. I am almost done with this journal and I am eager to see what it looks like finished.

Between Fremont, CA and Scottsdale, AZ (both next month), I have five new classes to debut. Working on new classes always inspires and pushes me. I strive to make each class different and I am looking forward to seeing how students translate the ideas into their own. When I say that my students inspire and push me, I really mean it.

My favorite pen is definitely the Kuretake Zig Letter Pen CocoIro (the pen in the photo above that is on the left side). What you need to know is that it's a two step process to buying this particular pen:

1. Pick out a pen body ($2.50 each)
2. Pick out a pen cartridge ($3.30 to $4.95 each)

It was extremely easy to put the pen together. I just popped the cartridge into the body and voila! The pen writes smoothly on paper. It does work on tape though it is NOT waterproof or permanent so as you can see in the above photo, I colored the flowers in at the bottom left hand corner, waited a minute or two and then purposely smudged the ink to see how it would react and it did smudge a little but the color held. The photo makes the color pink that I used appear lighter than it is. It's a bright, vibrant pink. It's now two days later and I can take my (dry) finger and rub the colored in flowers vigorously and while a tiny bit of pink appears on my finger, it doesn't look like any pink has rubbed off of the flower itself.

I also love the super fine tip (again, check the bottom left hand corner of the above photo as I wrote Zig and drew some hearts.) I am always a big fan of super fine pens that write really well and feel good in your hand!

I REALLY like these pens. That said, I probably would not go out and buy them in every color as it would be rather pricey (about $8 a pen) and I already have several other markers that I love. I am hoping to eventually buy more of the pens in black, blood red, blue black, sunset orange, and sepia. I would love to try their brush version of this pen!

The other pen that I bought was a Kuretake Zig Wink of Stella Glitter Marker Pen - 0.8 mm - Dark Pink. I am not a huge fan of glitter pens, but I figured that I was on a pink roll, that I'd try this one and for $2, I didn't have that much to lose. That said, I don't love this pen. I wanted to but the color of the pen was too subtle for me (it's hard to see in the above photo but in the bottom left corner I wrote glitter pen). Also, do I really need another glitter pen when I have the Sakura Stardust Gel Pen? The Sakura Stardust Gel Pen can make ANY pen or marker glittery! You just write with any pen or marker first, let it dry and write over it with the Sakura Stardust Gel Pen (or for a more subtle effect, use the Sakura Stardust Gel Pen first and then the other marker or pen. Sorry, Zig, but I'm loyal to Sakura with this one. Those of you who love glitter pens, however, the Kuretake Zig Wink of Stella Glitter Marker Pens may totally be up your alley. They come in a multitude of colors which you can buy individually or in sets!

Sailor Clear Candy Fountain Pen - Fine Nib - Metallic Pink Body is another "two part" pen:

1. Pick out a pen body ($16.50)
2. Pick out an ink cartridge ($1.65)

I picked out Sailor Clear Candy Fountain Pen Ink Cartridge - Pink - Pack of 2 to go along with the pen but it came with one black ink cartridge so I popped that one in instead.

I love this pen. First off, not only are they really cute (I know, but they are) but they fit really well in your hand and the ink just flows from the nib. I "tested" the pens on washi tape (they work, yay! You can see the date at the top left corner of the page) as well as on paper. I also wrote with the pen and then immediately brushed it with water, while it ran a little bit, the ink did hold. I tried the same "test" again two days later and the ink didn't move. I would like to try the reddish brown ink, yellow and orange. I can't afford to buy a pen body for every ink color I'd like to try so I may end up ordering refills and wait to test them out whenever a cartridge runs out. If you don't have a fountain pen, the Sailor Clear Candy Fountain Pens are an inexpensive (comparatively speaking) option. I may have to eventually order one just to keep in my purse as it really is a lovely fountain pen.

It's a busy weekend in the Kilmer House, folks! I'm all set, eager and prepped for my class tomorrow in Simi Valley. I know I keep saying it but it's my first workshop of 2012 and I'm excited! I have great plans for it!!

Favorite Art Books of 2011

* Not included in the photo but I wanted to mention my favorite fiction book of 2011, The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern.

-Poetry and Art: Kylie Johnson's Count Me the Stars and A Once Courageous Heart (I found one of these books at an Anthropologie store in AZ. The clerk told me that there was a second title and that they were out. I drove 20 minutes to the next store and they had it! I bought extra copies and gave them to friends at Christmas. I *love* these books. I would love, love, love to own one of her pottery pieces someday!)

-Morran Book compiled by Camilla Engman (Speaking of Camilla, her book published by Uppercase is a must.)

-Uppercase Magazine's Dottie Angel and Work/Life 2 (A disclaimer, I have everything that Uppercase has ever published. To say I am a fan is an understatement. I haven't reached stalker status yet but I do love their work.)

-Bowie Style's Print Pattern 2 (I loved the first book and was quite eager for the second book!)

-Open Studios with Lotta Jansdotter (artist's + the space they create in=Bliss)

-Masters: Book Arts (pure eye candy for the artist book lover. I wish that someone would publish more books like this one. Their Masters: Collage is also Heaven. They are refreshing changes from the abundance of technique/how to books on the market and they give our art the elevation that it deserves.)

-Speaking of technique books, two of them that I bought on eye candy status alone were Sarah Ahearn Bellemare's Painted Pages and Misty Mawn's Unfurling. (I can honestly say that I will probably never do the techniques or projects described in the books but their artwork is just gorgeous, honest and heartfelt. I enjoy both artists' works immensely.)

-I used to buy Amelia's magazine whenever I saw it and could afford it. I absolutely adored it. I have their previous book, Amelia's Anthology of Illustration but when I saw the new one, Amelia's Compendium of Fashion Illustration at Book Soup in West Hollywood, I whipped out the credit card.

-I am a regular reader of Julia Rothman's blog, Book By Its Cover (it's one of my favorite blogs as it's all about one of my favorite subjects, BOOKS.) I was very excited when I heard that she was coming out with a compilation of artist's sketchbooks called Drawn In: A Peek into the Sketchbooks... One of my favorite artists, Abbey Hendrickson, is in it which makes it worth picking up immediately!

-Modern Vintage Style-I like looking at artist's studios as well as homes that look like they belong to an artist and that's why this book was a must have for me!

-Typography Sketchbooks-yeah, I was hooked in from the minute I heard the title. Plus, Maira Kalman's work is in it...(fyi, Maira has quite a few books out that she has illustrated including Food Rules, Why We Broke Up and her latest is Looking at Lincoln. Um, yeah, I have all of her books, too.)

-The Bird King and Other Sketches-A Shaun Tan sketchbook. Enough said. (Don't know who Shaun Tan is? Go here. Yup, I have all of his books, too.)

-Missed Connections-Beautiful. Sweet. One of the best books I read in 2011. I want to see more from her.

-Cook Until Desired Tenderness-This book came out originally in 2005 but I never saw nor heard of it (or the artist, Cleo Papanikolas until I was at Castle in the Air in Berkeley in March of 2011. Her work is rich and inviting. I haven't read it yet as I can't stop looking at the illustrations long enough to pay any attention to the words on the page! A visual delight!

-Creative Walls-Another eye candy, can't put it down book.

-Floating Worlds: The Letters of Edward Gorey and Peter F. Neumeyer-Edward Gorey + Mail Art + A Really Well Written Book=Happiness I Can't Put Into Words.

-My Heart Wanders-I'm halfway through the book and I can't put it down. It's visually stunning. It's an interesting read when I'm not looking at the photos! An American Edition is due out sometime this year.

-Blabber Blabber Blabber: Volume 1 of Everything by Lynda Barry-Folks, this is a Lynda Barry book (volume 1 of 10) published by Drawn and Quarterly. If you are a Lynda Barry fan, you *need* it. If you don't know who Lynda Barry is, get your head out of the sand and go here. If you buy one comic book this year, get Blabber Blabber Blabber. Seriously, I think it was the most underrated comic of 2011.

-Nomad by Sibella Court-I am a huge fan of Sibella Court's first book, Etcetera. Nomad is in the same vein and is a visual feast for artists!

-The New Artisans-My favorite art book of 2011. I am always enthralled with anything made by hand and this book has everything in it. I can't put it down. It is pure inspiration.

-My two favorite collage books of 2011 were Cut & Paste and Cutting Edges. I've blogged about both books before. While they may not be for everyone, I recommend them for anyone with a strong interest in the art of collage.

-The Curiosities of Janice Lowry-A retrospective of Janice Lowry's 30 years as a working artist. It's a book that I can't help but pick up and flip through every time I pass it or see it (on my shelf or even at the bookstore!) I wish that there was more of her journals included but I am hoping for a second book (or even more!)

I love the above page. It's made up of mostly found papers (with the exception of the piece of tape, two small bits of scrapbook paper and the piece of vellum paper) from magazines, books, soap labels (the white and pink text along the left side of the page). I really had fun with the layout on this page. I love exploring images that aren't people that I can use symbolically in my work. I tend to gravitate towards images of women, hands and hearts but I also like objects from around the home as well. I use these images to stand for my feelings and thoughts, they quietly mean something to me and I tend to gravitate towards them.

One odd quirk about me, I don't use x-acto knives. Knowing me, I'll cut my finger off or even worse! I tend to cut things out with my scissors (tonic makes my favorite pair of scissors.) I've tried x-acto knives many, many times and I am just not very handy or patient with them. There's something about cutting out a detailed image with a pair of scissors that I find oddly relaxing.

In other news, I added my profile to Seek Your Course. It's a website to find instructors and classes in your area (as well as list your class information if you are an instructor). You can find out more information here. I haven't added any testimonials to the page as I have hard time with stuff like that. If anyone wants to leave any comments on this post about any of my classes, I would greatly appreciate them.

I'm looking forward to my first class of 2012 this Sunday in Simi Valley.

Before I forget, Frenzy Stamper in AZ received my samples (yay!) so if you've been waiting to see them, they're there! (Please note, the February workshops in Scottsdale are my ONLY AZ workshops until Art Unraveled in August so catch 'em while you can!)

I'm participating in an internet blackout and striking against the SOPA and PIPA bills on Wednesday, January 18th. If you use sites like tumblr, pinterest, youtube, etc... these bills WILL affect you if passed. More here.

Oh Hello Friend Package Exchange 2011

I rarely sign up for swaps these days but I am definitely glad that I signed up for Oh, Hello Friend's 2011 Package Exchange.

These are the goodies that I sent to my swap buddy, Maggie, a.k.a. nosurefooting:
I must confess that I am not very good at wrapping packages (trust me on this one) so I made sure to take extra care and time to make the packages look very good. I tried to select gifts from Maggie's wish list that I thought she would enjoy:
Since I was traveling to Boston and New York for the holidays, I asked Maggie if she would kindly send the package to my parents' house and she thoughtfully obliged. It was so nice to have something else to look forward to (especially after a long plane ride!). Here's a photo (taken under my parents' Christmas tree after midnight) of Maggie's gifts. Look at how pretty her wrapping is! I saved all of it as I would like to reuse some if it in my journal pages:

Some people tend to think that I collect a lot of things. Not really. Yes, while I love my paper, books, old diaries, pens, tape, alphabet and number sets, I'm very selective about what I bring into our home. We live in a tiny space and don't have a lot of room for a ton of stuff.

One of the things that I can't resist are old stamp sets bought in bits and pieces. I tend to look for X's and O's, letters to spell out favorite words (like peace and love) and numbers in a vast variety of sizes. I try to buy ones that are usable (where the rubber isn't cracked or missing portions.) I love the character that they provide when they don't stamp well on a page. I rarely use them but I like looking at them and imagining their previous life.

My plans include art making, soup making, bread making, reading, film watching, walking, a visit to the farmer's market and who knows what else? Now that I've got all of my housekeeping done (a.k.a. class schedule for the New Year), I can get on with a proper blog post!

Above is another sneak peek at my latest journal. I've named it Wanderlust. I started it right before we left for Boston and I have been working in it daily since. It is an unusual format for me with pages that flip and fold up and out. It's also small (about 5 x 7"). It's a smaller book (for me) and the way that the book folds up on itself is very different. I'm really enjoying working in it.

I finally got my food processor/blender (yay!) and I've been making smoothies every morning for the past couple of days. If anyone has any favorite blogs, websites or recipes, I'd love to hear them!

Pens to Improve Your Handwriting

Come and learn a fun and easy new stitch while creating a hand bound, hardcover journal made by your own hands in your own unique style! We’ll start the class by making the journal and then diving in to work on the pages. Learn how to transform found, magazine and old book pages using color, texture, pattern and more turning the pages into unique, new, visually delightful pages that sing of you!

Ideas and inspiration are everywhere. Learn how to capture those ideas and make them your own. Building Up the Layers-

Learn a whole new way to approach a blank page! In this workshop, you will combine paper ephemera, tape, rubber stamps, watercolor crayons and a whole lot more to create lusciously layered backgrounds that can be used in ANY art form. As you work, you will gain new insight into the principles of collage such as composition, design, color, pattern and much, much more. You will walk out having created several layered backgrounds as well as the confidence to create even more on your own!

Listen to Your Heart-

You will start by deconstructing an old hardcover book and creating an embellished, textured, luscious and visually stimulating artist’s book. Using a combination of vintage and new, you will create fresh, one of a kind, completely you artist’s journal pages while learning new techniques and ideas. Working large and somewhat fast (though not too fast that you won’t be able to keep up!), we’ll cover a lot of ground in this four hour workshop.

Building a Visual Vocabulary (repost from 7/5/2010)

One thing that you will notice when you see my pages is that I know what I like. :) I've built up and amassed what I call my Visual Vocabulary. You will see things like:

The color pink, yellow, buttercreams and black and white (I love pink and exploring and expanding it's many possibilities. Yellow is a hard color to find and I love how it POPS things. Buttercreams are just yummy. Black and White is striking and always pulls your eye into the page.)
Hands (I go out of my way to collect images of hands)
Henna hands (what could be better)
Hearts (and the word love, I use them a lot)
Peace Symbols
Eyes (ahhh, look deep)
Women (I often use imagery of women to 'say' what I don't write on the page)
Religious Iconography (though I am not religious, the images of various faiths appeal to me)

to name a few...

The majority of my work is done in journal or book form. I know what I like and what I can use visually to 'speak' volumes for me without having to describe the colors or the images on the page. I use these colors and images to express my emotions, thoughts and feelings.

You'll notice a lot of other artists do this as well in their journals (and obviously, in their artwork). They have images and colors that appeal to them and speak volumes. Artists over time will devote countless paintings, pages and studies to specific colors and images that resonate and speak to them. What speaks to you?

Open your journal up and play with colors and imagery. Don't worry about it just start to work in your journal. Continue to work in your book (books) over time. Go back and look over your pages. Notice a pattern? See any colors that you gravitate towards? How about images that you use again and again? Note them. Journal about what these colors and images mean to you. Don't stress or worry about these things, they will appear with time. That's one of the many bonuses of keeping an art journal! You'll start to notice the little things more...Trust me. Be open to it and it will happen. Open your eyes. Watch to see what your pages are 'saying'. You'll be amazed what you didn't see before...

Wanderlust-Looks can be deceiving. Create this surprisingly complex looking by quite easy journal with pages that flip and fold up and out. You’ve probably never seen anything like this before! The journal is also small enough to slip into your bag for on the go art journaling (I’ve worked in it on a plane, in a car, etc…) After we construct the journal, we will dive deep onto the pages spilling layers of color, texture, pattern, journaling and more. Walk out with your head spinning full of ideas and inspiration!

La Petite Muse

With your own hands and in your own style, construct a small, personal journal completely from scratch. You’ll start by choosing your own handmade and decorative paper to use as the cover and as the inside pages! Create your own unique book sewn by your own hands. After constructing the book, you will then learn a multitude of new collage techniques for working on the pages. This was one of my favorite journals to work in and I hope it will become one of yours!

I'm all about the process when it comes to art making! I enjoyed watching the page morph into something completely different than what I had originally set out to do. I had to do a lot of pushing and pulling to get the page where I wanted it to be but it was worth it in the end as I ended up using a lot of colors that I don't normally gravitate towards (purple and green.)

On Tuesday, I'll be announcing my Winter 2012 classes. I'll be traveling to Fremont, CA February 10-12th and a week later I return to Scottsdale, AZ (February 17-19th.) I have lots of new classes and ideas to share! I hope to see you there!

My new class, Revel in the Moment, is in full swing. If you signed up and haven't received any information from me, please check your spam box (and if it's not there, please email me!) I send out information by hand within 24 hours (usually it's a lot shorter than that!). The class is in full swing right now and people have been posting lots of pages of their creations. Sharing artwork and seeing what others make from my class templates and prompts is always one of the things that I enjoy most about teaching.

I hope that your weekend is going well. I'm off to the Farmers' Market! I haven't been in over a month and I miss it. My sister gave me her blender/food processor and I can't wait to start making smoothies with it. TTFN!

I started this page the other day and finished the journaling on the plane. I really enjoyed the process and seeing how it evolved. I just kept adding to it until I liked it. The rose is printed on vellum and it was a grayish and red color. I used my sweets and latte pens and totally changed the color of it. I love the journaling on the stem and petals as well.

Our last night in Massachusetts for some time. We're trying to get the whole family together for a dinner out.

We had Baby Jack with us all day. He keeps you busy! His mantra is, "I love Mama. I love Dada. I love choo choos." At least he knows what he likes.

We're leaving tomorrow afternoon. This is always the hardest part for me. I hate saying goodbye and I hate flying. Think good thoughts, please!!

Above is my finished page that I teased you with last week. I really am trying to push the amount of layering that I do. I may not always love it like the page from the other day, but I try to be satisfied without beating myself up over it.

Goodies from Ink About It

I found some fun new toys at Ink About It in Westford, MA last week. Not everything is in the photo as I tore most of the paper down (parent size sheets I cut down into pieces (as seen above) or quarters.) I gave my 13 year old niece some art supplies and two Smash books. I always say if any of my family members want art supplies for birthdays or Christmas presents, I'll hook them up quite happily!!! She loved everything that we gave her so that made me very happy!!

I bought Valentine's Day label stickers (I am a sucker for Valentine's Day stuff); DIY Christmas houses (just like the ones my Nana had); Smash book in green (I buy them for the paper); scrapbook papers; mini permanent glue dots; Faber Castell Aquarelle Watercolor Pencils (to try); new Amy Tangerine tape (I'm running low on tape for classes so it's time to stock up); and some Christmas sale run-ons for the cool snowflakes.

My last journal page of 2011. I started this as a demo page in class the other day. I finished it up last night while spending time with my in-laws.

One of the first things that I did this morning after taking a shower was to sit and spend some time in my journal. Art is always a good way to spend the first day of the New Year.

We had a nice visit today with my Father in Law, his wife, my sister in law, brother in law and nieces. It was a day of good food, a nice walk (over to Tivoli Bay), Christmas presents (my spoiled son!) and good conversation.

We ended the night visiting David's friend, Andrew, whom I always enjoy seeing. David has mentioned him on his blog and has a great interview with him from '79 on his blog.

We're leaving New York early tomorrow morning and heading back to Braintree. It's been a short visit but a good one...

Here's a photo of one of the two class tables today. We had tape, paper, ink and more flying! I had a great time teaching the past two days. I really want to thank the gang at Ink About It in Westford, MA for another great time. I'm looking forward to coming back in the summer!!

We're in New York for the weekend. I drove back to Braintree, MA to pick up David and Tristan. Four hours later we're here in Tivoli, NY with my in-laws. Looking forward to a good New Years Weekend here!

Fun Goodies from Paper Source

Having a great time teaching at Ink About It! I always look forward to my classes in Westford. It was nice to see some familiar faces as well as to be introduced to some new ones!

After class I drove to Dedham to meet my family. The eight (is enough) of us ate dinner at The Yard House. It was an insane two hour wait (with an extremely well behaved baby, I might add.) I'm not sure if I would go back. The food was okay but expensive (another Christmas present from my sister.)

David and I walked over to Paper Source. I had a gift certificate from my parents burning a hole in my pocket. You'll see what I bought in the above picture. I bought letterpress bits, ribbon, Martha foil glitter and a great book called, "I am Her" (more info here: http://www.live-inspired.com/I-Am-Her-P1000)

It's about eleven now and I have a long day ahead of me. I'm teaching from 10-5, have to drive to Braintree, unload, pack and pick up the boys to head to Tivoli, New York for a visit with David's Dad, my sister in law and nieces. Looking forward to it. Not looking forward to all of the driving but looking forward to the visit. That said, I'd rather drive than fly any day!

I'm not sure what we're doing on our anniversary (16 years, already??) on New Years Eve. I hope that whatever you do this weekend you wave goodbye to the old year and welcome the New Year with open arms.

Another fun and busy day!

My sister came over early with Jack (my little nephew). We hung out for awhile while I ran around the house doing various errands.

All of us trekked to the mall. I needed a new pair of sunglasses (my favorite pink pair broke. Sob!) and some new tights. The mall is not one of my favorite places but since visiting New England Comics is a must for me every trip, I needed sunglasses (they have the best sunglasses!) and they moved to the mall, I had no choice but to hit the South Shore Plaza. It's changed so much since I was a kid. I miss the educational store and ohhhh how very much I miss Windsor Button where I would buy stickers!!!

I really enjoy just visiting New England. I am always flooded with so many memories.

We visited my sister-in-law and her family tonight. We hadn't seen them in awhile and the kids were so big. Tristan had a great time playing Lego and videogames with our younger nephew. We got a kick seeing what our older nephew did to his microphone with all of the colored duct tape we got him for Christmas! It was a fun night.

All packed and ready for my classes at Ink About It tomorrow and Friday. I'm looking forward to teaching! I'll be debuting a new class, too. Cool beans!

I was very happy to be able to sleep in as none of us had really had a full night's sleep in a few days. That bed felt good last night after two long (but fun) days!

I've been busy with my family and running around after my little munchkin of a nephew. My sister and I attempted to get to the mall today but after getting stuck in atrocious traffic not once but twice, we turned around. I'll have to swap out that cookie smelling candle I got tomorrow! (I don't like dessert smelling candles at all. My Mom is the same way. We both like candles that smell like the forest. I also like ones that smell like fruit.)

David and I walked to Michaels for some gifties for our nieces and nephews. My 12 year old nephew wants colored duct tape so I am going to fulfill that wish! David keeps asking, "What does he want tape for?" My other niece wants art supplies so I have a whole bag of goodies for her that I've been setting aside for her.

My new online class is in full swing. I am really enjoying seeing what others have been posting. I always enjoy seeing what folks make! It is the best part of teaching.

I'm all prepped and ready for my classes later this week at Ink About It in Westford, MA. I'm really looking forward to seeing some familiar faces and meeting some new ones.

I forgot to mention that it snowed yesterday. Nothing stuck and it was over before you blinked but it did add a nice effect to the day! From the looks of the weather forecast we won't be having any snow while we're here. I was hoping for a little of it before we leave...I really miss having real weather in Los Angeles. I saw that it was 75° there yesterday! Crazy!!

I hope that everyone is having a nice holiday. We had a good day here.

We started the day bright and early rushing to get over to my sister's house to see my nephew open his presents as well as seeing my Uncle and Cousin who could only stay so long. Then came the mad rush of opening presents. Trying to take turns opening presents with eight people (including a toddler and a 14 year old) can be interesting. My nephew could've spent all day with his train set (the same goes with Tristan and his new Lego sets) and have been content with that. I remember how it was as a kid wanting to play with toys...

We had places to go and people to see! My Cousin Bev, Aunt Sis and family members were waiting! I was really looking forward to seeing them. Before we trekked over there, I was with David in my Mom's car, I wanted to see my Grandmother's old house so I drove David on a tour of Foxboro reminiscing. Holidays can be hard for everyone when you start thinking of those who aren't with us anymore. I try to think most about the happy times we experienced and the memories made.

We had a great day. Bev went out of her way to make a delicious meal for all of us. As always, everything was excellent and quite yummy. The day was spent talking and visiting with everyone.

Now we're back at my parents' house and everyone is exhausted. I'm off to relax and try to get some sleep. None of us has had a full night's sleep in several days so I'm hoping to catch some serious zzzz's tonight.

Christmas Presents

David's presents to me, a curated selection of some of his favorite books (except Modern Vintage which has been on my wishlist since I first laid eyes on it. There are pictures of Nathalie Lete's house, people!!) I can't wait to spend a few lazy days reading. Alas, those lazy days will have to wait as Boston and the family awaits!

I wanted to say thank you again to all of you who gifted money, forwarded links or just sent good thoughts to M and the kids. We raised over $600, enough money to pay the heating bill and for essentials like diapers. My sister is meeting up with her tomorrow to give her everything. M has no idea. I wish that I could be there but we want her to have the money before it gets too late in the day. What a Christmas surprise it will be!!! I know that it is a very tough time for a lot of folks right now so when I say *thank YOU*, I really and truly mean that. Thank you.

I hope that everyone is having a wonderful Holiday season. I know that in this time of hustle and bustle we can easily stress out and forget the little things. Try to slow down, smile and laugh more. Hold doors open for people behind you. Say hello to a stranger. In other words, stop and remember the love that this time of year (and all year) should be about.

And don't forget, go make some art.

Above is the finished inside cover of my new journal. I haven't had as much time as I want to to work in it but I really am enjoying the process.

My new online class, Revel in the Moment, should be up and live tomorrow (a day early! Yay!) I won't be closing sign-ups at all so you can sign up and participate at your own leisure.

I'm a busy bee. The next thing on my To Do list is to prep for my Westford, MA classes. I'm really looking forward to teaching at Ink About It. Unfortunately my Whitman, MA classes were canceled. I am very thankful to be teaching at Ink About It.

I'm also working hard at trying to get my Jan-March schedule up and on the blog. I have fingers crossed that I can get it up onto the blog before Friday.

So in between all of these things, I'm also trying to take time to make home cooked meals, relax with my family, watch episodes of Jack Benny (I love Jack Benny), read, journal and reflecting upon 2011 and what a year it's been.

A Favor...

I've never done anything like this before but the past few months have been extremely difficult for a family friend. She lost her job (as a teacher) in September. Her husband has been very ill and unable to work for a long time. They have two year old triplets. She has been able to scrape together enough money to pay her mortgage but is barely getting by with everything else and the kiddos are still in diapers. She's been trying to get heating assistance and there's an 8 week wait.

We've known M for 19 years. My sister, Erin, met M when she was 15. I want to say that M is a good kid but she's 2 years older than me so it feels weird saying that but she's always been a good friend and the past few months have been really hard. I've always wanted to sponsor a family for Christmas but have never had the money myself so I thought that opening up my blog for a few days before Christmas might be a good way to help out M, her husband and their babies.

I'm going to leave this button up until noon PST, December 23rd. After that, all money collected will be given directly to M and her family. New Journal Cover December 2011

David, Tristan and I ran over to Dark Delicacies in Burbank today to meet director John Landis. He was there to sign his new book, Monsters in the Movies. Landis was really cool and took the time to talk with each fan individually. I have to see if I can sneak a peek at the book as David has probably already wrapped it up in plastic and put it on one of his bursting at the seams bookshelves.
I keep typing 2012 at the same time I'm trying to slow down and enjoy the rest of 2011 while I still can!

Above is my latest journal cover. I showed you a teaser picture yesterday. It is not acrylic paint on the cover that you see. It's a combination of gouache and water soluble crayons. To say I'm having fun with it is an understatement. Wait until you see the pages inside the journal and what they do (I haven't worked on any of them yet but I am excited with the layout and construction of this journal.) I haven't worked in anything like this before (that I can remember) and I've made hundreds of journals!

One quick reminder, I am teaching in Massachusetts the last weekend of December. If you are interested in any of my Whitman, MA workshops, you need to sign up before this Tuesday night at midnight PST (20 December 2011) or else the workshops there will be canceled.

My workshops at Ink About It are a go and I am very much looking forward to teaching there. I adore that store and it's always so good to see familiar faces and to meet new ones as well! More info on the workshops can be found here.

I am hoping to have my Jan-March workshops for 2012 listed before I leave. I'm still waiting for dates from one store so that's why I've been hesitant to post them. I would rather list them in one big swoop. Thanks for being so patient.

Remember with this holiday season to try to slow down and revel in the moment. It gets crazy this time of year and it's always the little things later on that we cherish and remember the most.

Work in Progress: New Journal Cover

I started working on a new journal last night. Above is a quick "before" shot of the new journal cover. Before you ask, I did not use acrylic paint. More on that later. I'll be honest in saying that I don't like the "before" shot but I love what it looks like now and I'm very happy that I kept pushing it. I'll show you tomorrow what it morphed into.

I've been non stop working lately (it's a good thing, not complaining). My weekend is being spent working diligently on my latest online class, Revel in the Moment. I want you to love the class as much as I loved working on my journal for the class. I never sit down thinking, "This will be a class" as I work in my journal. However, I try to approach each page in a different manner. The handout is over 30 pages so far and I'm not even done with it yet. I'm excited.

My goal is to have the class up earlier than the 22nd. With Christmas next weekend, prepping for my Massachusetts classes and all of the other stuff that I need to get done before we leave, I promise that I'll do my best! I just want to stress one more time that the class is entirely a work at your own pace class with material that you can access at any time.

Even though this time of year can get crazy, I still am trying to take the time and spend at least 10 to 15 minutes doing something in my journal daily. I don't try to finish pages in one go. I just do what I can. I don't beat myself up over the fact that sometimes it may take a couple of days to get a page done. It's all good.

Some quick film recommendations, David, Tristan and I went to the New Beverly the other night for a double bill of The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance and Ride the High Country (both are two of my favorite films.) I get very tired of hearing people say that they don't like Westerns. If those words have ever come out of your mouth, you're clearly not watching the right westerns. Go watch the two films above and let me know if you've changed your mind.

A wonderful bonus that night was getting to see Peter Bogdanovich again. Bogdanovich is one of my favorite film directors and critics, not to mention a living, breathing film history reference guide. The stories that Bogdanovich can tell! We've seen him in person several times. David and I were very disappointed that we didn't notice him sitting in the front (before Liberty Valance started) as we were hoping to have a chance to meet and talk with him for a few minutes. I'll watch any film he's made or any documentary he's in, and damn, his impressions are spot on.

We also saw Tintin earlier in the week at a special sneak peek screening. It was fun but all in all, not very good. I spent most of the time watching the visuals, which are stunning. The story line is severely lacking in quite a few places and it's one big chase after another. Tristan loved it, but his favorite film is Tron: Legacy so that doesn't say much. One little side note, we did see it in 3-D and I really don't recommend sitting anywhere near the front for anything in 3-D. I was sick afterward.

New Artisans by Olivier Dupon (I pretty much dropped everything when I saw this book. I saw a teaser post online on someone's blog and wasn't that impressed with it. In person, I wanted to sit on the floor in the bookstore and just devour it.)

Fiction wise I just finished reading Italo Calvino's Invisible Cities, which I absolutely adored. It is a book that I know that I will be returning to. I am now reading The Book of Qualities and really enjoying it. It's short, sweet and poignant.

All set and ready for my class at Stampin from the Heart tomorrow. It's my last weekend L.A. class in 2011. I don't have any weekend dates booked for SO CA now until late January.

I am super excited to share new ideas with my students. The Sanctuary Journal was one of my favorites to work in. I'll also have some special raffles and giveaways all throughout the class. Looking forward to it!

PSA on Pilot's Latte and Sweets Pens -Sweets have been discontinued

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but when I went to link to the Sweets pen set on Jetpens the other day, only individual colors came up. Odd as they always sold them in sets as well. I posted on their facebook wall and sadly found out that the Sweets pens were discontinued in August.

The good news is that the Lattes are still being made.

The other good news is that as of the time that I'm writing up this post, there are still some Sweet pens left.

Please note that BOTH the sweets and the lattes sets have a white pen. There is no difference between the two white pens. I did not show the white pen in any of my photos. I LOVE it. It's a great white pen that writes clear but DRIES WHITE.

Here is a side by side color comparison. The Sweets are on the left and the Lattes are on the right.

It's funny that they label the Pilot Lattes as the "Pastels" when the colors are a tad darker than some of the Sweets. The lightest sweets are the apple green, blueberry lavender, soda blue and strawberry pink. I just stocked up on my favorite colors in the Sweets series: apple green, cherry pink, grape purple, mango orange, mint green, and strawberry pink. Sadly, they were already out of the peach orange. Yes, I will be hoarding these with the pens tightly capped and stored flat.

The colors are completely different than other manufacturer's gel pens, too.

My Essential Tape Rolls

Most of you know how very, very much I love tape. I use it to attach things to the pages. I use it as backgrounds. I wrap packages with it. I just love it. Most of you also know that I already have a huge post on tape that can be found here.

In the photo above you'll see the tapes that I bring with me in my on the go journal bag (the very same bag that you saw here that I work out of even at home.) These are my essentials.

My favorite tapes are primarily the washi paper tapes in solid colors. I love using them to layer on top of each other (most are transparent allowing you to make new "colors" of tape by layering one on top of another or to see whatever is underneath them.)

The little rolls of washi tape, I took all of my thin mt tape sets and tied them together. I throw them in a ziploc bag and they fit in the bottom of my journal bag. They are fun to layer or use them to draw attention to something on your journal page.

My favorite washi tape vendors are:

Ginko Papers in Los Angeles (an amazing one woman business!) Ginko is having a 15% off sale until December 20, 2011. Code word is HOLIDAY.

Washimatta (another one woman business! She is on a mini vacation until the middle of December.)

The other tapes that I LOVE are transparent printed deco tapes:

Script from Tapeswell (LOVE tapeswell! They are having a 25% off your entire purchase through the end of the year. More info here.)

The other thinner transparent printed tapes that you see above and that I use a lot are made by a company called o check. One is transparent script and the other is transparent typewriter type. Both are in black type. If you search supplies on etsy for type tape, typewriter tape, script tape, cursive tape, etc... they pop up every now and then. The prices run from about $3.50 a roll up to $9 a roll. Shop around! Also, there is a protective sticker around the top of each roll. If you peel the white printed sticker off, the transparent tape is revealed. It's cool 'cause then you can still use the sticker piece in your work (I hoard them.)

Pink type tape made by Prima Marketing (discontinued though sometimes it pops up on etsy and ebay). I hoard this tape. When I found out it was going to be discontinued I bought 2 dozen packs of it.

I love layering the printed transparent tapes on top of my journal pages. I also will layer washi paper tape on top of the printed transparent tapes (ooh! instant color!)

The large roll of pink tape is NOT like the washi tape at all. It's like colored masking tape. I bought two large rolls here. It's pink. I couldn't help it.

My Essential Tools

I've never been one to fall for the latest and greatest gadget. I don't own any of the big, fancy tools. I go for simple.

My favorite tools are:

Tonic Scissors-I've owned many scissors in my life. I swore up and down that I didn't want or "need" these. A friend of mine encouraged me to pick them up and put them in my hands. I fell in love. The grip is perfect. They cut well (yes, there are "teeth" on one side of the scissors. Flip the scissors over and the teeth go away for a nice straight cut.) I've had mine many years and they are still nice and sharp.

For traveling on an airplane, I paid a few bucks for a pair of rounded scissors (with a protective cap and in pink) from JetPens. They are sooo much better than kids' scissors. I can fly with them and not have to worry about someone confiscating them.

Bone folder-used for folding, scoring, burnishing, rub-on letter transfers and all things that involve smooshing something down. It can also be used to tear paper if your ruler is buried under piles of paper. One of my best investments!

Glue stick-my glue sticks of choice are: Coccoina, Tombo (permanent), Scotch (permanent), Avery (permanent). Anything labeled permanent is usually fair game. Coccoina is my favorite (a great source for it is here). I love the 40 gram size as it lasts a longggg time. Smells good, too.

Metal ruler-Yes, you can use it to measure. I use it to tear. I have about four metal rulers. The smallest ruler I have is 6" (perfect for the airplane) while the largest is 36" (perfect for tearing large sheets of paper down.) The trick to tearing is instead of grabbing the paper and tearing up towards you, hold it and if you're right handed, place the part of the paper you want to tear on the right side of the ruler. Hold the paper at an angle so that you don't tear up towards you but instead tear to the left. Keep the tear going against the edge of the ruler as you tear. It takes a bit of practice but it does work!

Old rag-I use an old rag for burnishing papers down. Anytime I glue, I have my handy rag nearby and I gently burnish the papers down to the page.

Old catalogs or magazines are my favorite gluing surface. When I'm done, I toss it in the recycling bin.

Additional favorite tools:

Glue dots- I love mini, permanent glue dots for attaching transparencies to the page. A little dot of glue in each corner, smoosh down and I'm good to go.

My 14+ year old Fiskars rotary paper trimmer. I use it exclusively to cut matboard. I've never had to change the blade (only the little rubber strip under the blade.) It slices through matboard like butter.

Staz-On ink pad in black (stamps on everything including tape and transparencies.)

Rubber stamps-will get their own post soon.

Ditto stencils.

Pens-got their own post yesterday.

Gel medium (has its own post here.)

Glue brushes-I use cheap bristle brushes. Harbor Freight has the best price on them. You can get a whole box for about $5. I don't like foam brushes. You use them once and then toss them. I like the bristle/chip brushes as I can wash them with a little soap and use them repeatedly.

My Bare Bones, Don't Leave Home Without 'em, Absolute Favorite Pens

People always ask what my favorite pens are. I've done several posts on my favorite pens (there's a big extensive list of all of my favorite pens here.) Above is a photo of my absolute, most basic, necessary set of pens. There are my "don't leave home without them" pens:

Rapidosketch .35 (not to be confused with rapidograph which I've found too scratchy for the many layers that we often work on.) I fill it with permanent, waterproof black ink (the own should come with its own bottle if ink.) This is my favorite pen. Be very careful and write normal, taking care not to press hard on the tip (the pen can be fragile. If the tip gets broken, you might as well toss the whole pen as you can buy a replacement tip but it costs as much as the pen. I don't clean mine after every use. Instead, I make sure to store it flat and if I haven't used it every 2 weeks or so, I make sure to use it. Another quick tip, you only need to fill it less than halfway. Keep an old rag around to wipe off excess ink. Turn any parts gently until the stop. Don't twist anything too hard.)

Sakura Gloss Pink Glaze Pen (I love all products that Sakura makes, especially the Glaze and Shuffle pens but this one is my absolute favorite color!)

My little cigarette case (that's what they market them at the $.99 in Japantown, San Francisco to be) full of Pilot Latte and Sweets (it looks like as of this writing 12/8/2011 that Jetpens is out of the sets of the Sweets. They have some individually.) The difference between the Lattes and the Sweets are the colors. I. Love. These. Pens. The tips are tiny. I love coloring in with them. They last forever. (JetPens is the best place for these pens and a lot of other fun pens. Jetpens is a small company and they offer awesome service. I've been ordering from them for a long time.)

Update on 12/9/2011 on the Sweets Pens. The Sweets have been discontinued but the Lattes are still available. More here.

Several folks have asked about the glue that I use and the best place to get it. My favorite glue stick is Coccoina in 40 gram size. A couple of weeks ago via a google search I found a great mail order source for it, Green Apple Supply! If you're like me and you order 10 or more at a time, this is a great deal. Granted, you can order any amount and even pick the size glue stick you want (10, 20 or 40 gram. I always get 40 gram). I ordered on Friday and had the glue sticks in hand on Monday. Customer service is top notch, too! The glue sticks last awhile before you need to reorder so just make sure that you store them away from the heater and always keep the lid capped tightly when not in use.

The Not So Glamorous Life of an Artist

'Tis the season to be insanely busy. I'm working on several projects right now. I have a handful of in person classes left this year. I'm working like a loon on my new online class. Shopping at Kinokuniya

I had a great time teaching in Simi Valley (huge thanks to Janet, Darcy and Kathy.)

On the way home I made a big detour to downtown Los Angeles to shop at Kinokuniya. I hadn't been there in a long time. I scored big time! I am always looking for tiny alphabet and number sets and they had these. Yay! I also bought some more washi tape in colors that I was running low on. As a "bonus", they threw in the parking validation stamp. I guess that I'll be making a trip back there this week. *Rolls eyes*

I spent some time today going through some of my stash (that I really do stash away when I'm not using it) and swapping out what I think I want to work with now vs. what I've grown tired of.

My "now" pile (some of it is seen above) will go in my journal bag (I use a double sided Eagle Creek pack-it cube, with focal images in one side and background ephemera and transparencies in the other.)

I've been doing this for years and it really does help me as well as to keep my supply stash fresh and new. That said, it doesn't mean that I don't add to that stash every now and then.

Every now and then I'll visit some of my favorite shops (see the where I shop button the right side of this blog). I also love scouring etsy and ebay for paper packs. I'm always looking for new ephemera! I also love seeking out things at my local used bookstores. I enjoy recycling catalogs, magazines and flyers in my workwork as well as picking freebies up that I find in my travels.

Caran d'ache Neo Art Watersoluble Wax Pastels a.k.a. One of my Favorite Mediums to Use

If you've taken an in person class with me, chances are you've seen me demo and had a chance to play with my Caran d'ache Neo Art Watersoluble Wax Pastels. They're one of my most favorite tools to use to add color to the page. I call them the "Insert Expensive Car Name Here" of watersoluble crayons.

There is a HUGE difference between these chunky crayons vs. the neocolor II (skinny) crayons. They're expensive but there's a good reason for it. Use the skinny neocolor II's and then use these babies and you'll see what I mean. There is MUCH more pigment in the chunky Neo Art wax pastels vs the skinny crayons. MUCH MORE. They also last FOREVER. I still have my original set (and have only had to replace a handful of colors) which I bought more than ten years ago. It's the ones we use in class. The above set is my personal set for at home.

You can blend these with *anything* wet (paint, acrylic mediums, water, tea, spit, beer, etc...) and they will move. My favorite way to use them is dry, colored hard and then rubber with an old rag or paper towel. You don't need to seal them at all but rub them in with a rag *OR* use something wet to blend them into the page.

You don't need a full set of 60. The colors that I continually reach for are:

Golden Yellow
Ice Blue
Gold
Silver
White
Black
Cobalt Violet
Purplish Red
Grass Green
Lemon Yellow
Spring Green
Azurite Blue
Burnt Sienna

Shop around as they used to average (MANY years ago around $3.50 a crayon.) The price has gone UP since then and now average about $4.50-5.50 per crayon. Debbie at Frenzy Stamper in Scottsdale has them (in my favorite colors) and locally I have seen them at Graphaids (West L.A. has them open stock last I checked. Call first.).

Also, if you do buy a set of 30, don't go looking for a second set of the other 30 colors. They don't sell them that way. It's rare to see a store owner have the full set of 60 "open stock". I learned that the hard way many moons ago.

Caran d'ache names EVERYTHING neo art and it is VERY confusing as to what to buy. *IF* you want the crayons that I am talking about you want THESE , Caran d'ache NeoArt Aquarelle Watersoluble Wax Pastels. They are NOT chalk. They are NOT oil. They are FAT crayons (they are about the size of your thumb). Please do not confuse them with these, these, these or these. Unless you buy the Caran d'ache NeoArt Watersoluble Wax Pastels at wholesale price, you will NOT find them for less than $4 *per* crayon.

A few friends have asked for book recommendations after reading Erin Morgenstern's The Night Circus (if you haven't read it yet, drop everything and go read it. It's that good. Plan your weekend around it.)

The following books are currently in my reading/read pile:

Sophie's World by Jostein Gaarder (I picked this up years ago when I was working at a bookstore. I couldn't get in to it then, but I'm going to try again!)

Einstein's Dreams by Alan Lightman (the book that inspired Erin to write "The Night Circus". Read it. Loved it. Might not be for everyone.)

The Book of Qualities by J. Ruth Gendler (I am saving this one for last. It's full of short chapters and line drawings. If I love it, I will seek it out in hardcover.)

Little Kingdoms by Steven Millhauser (this just sounds fabulous. Can't wait to read it.)

Invisible Cities by Italo Calvino (I just started reading this one. My husband includes it in his list of favorite books.)

Revel in the Moment

A workshop designed to encourage you to slow down and to use your journal to process your world upon the pages of your journal.

In this e-book* form course, you will learn how to construct a simple, made from scratch art journal!

You will work completely at your own pace utilizing collage templates and journal prompts (all new and designed specifically for this class!)

Are there photos?

Yes, there are photos of my sample pages. You will also have the opportunity to upload and share (if you wish) your own sample pages.

Is there a discussion group?

Yes! By popular demand, there will be an easy access forum for you to discuss the class with fellow students.

Is there a handout?

YES! I am a firm believer in handouts. You will receive a detailed 39 page handout that you can download, save and print out. There are step by step instructions, tons of information, photos and more. There are also (new!) collage templates for you to use! My thought process for every journal page in the Revel in the Moment Book is documented to give you an insight into how I approach and work through a journal page.

What's the supply list?

I really want you to use stuff that you already have on hand. For the pages, you need glue (a glue stick, gel medium, whatever adhesive you usually use for paper). You will need some of your favorite pens (again, use what you have on hand. I did not limit myself with this class but used my favorite supplies (as shown here in this blog post). The pens that I used include a black permanent, waterproof pen (Rapidosketch .35), Sakura Glaze and Souffle pens. You need a pair of scissors, an old rag or paper towel for burnishing the images, a gluing surface (like an old catalog). You will need a selection of your favorite papers (think along the lines of anything that you would glue down to create a page: handmade papers, scrapbook papers, old magazines, catalogs or books) for the collage part of the class. Optional, but not totally necessary are: stickers, transparencies, washi tape, rub-ons, etc...

Again, I want to stress, do NOT go out and buy anything for this class. Please use what you have on hand.

For Creating the Book-Fabric and/or handmade paper, tacky glue (or gel medium), awl, needle, waxed linen thread, cardstock (I use 140 lb wausau exact index cardstock but you can use your favorite paper, scrapbook paper, handmade paper, junk paper, etc...)

I work full time, can I take this class at any time?

Yes! This is a work at your own pace class. You can sign up at any point. You will have full access to the class. I am always available to answer and respond to questions.

When does the class start?

This is a work at your own pace class that is available NOW.

Within 24 hours of you signing up, you will receive an email from me with information. Please take a minute to read this email (upon receipt) in its entirety. My main idea with this class was encouraging people to slow down, document and enjoy their life while processing daily events and happenings upon the pages of their journal. I know that people are usually extremely busy during the holiday season and I thought what better time to make a new journal to reflect and revel upon the end of one year and the beginning of another! Hence, this class was born.

I am often teaching and traveling and I never leave home without my journal bag! I work exclusively from my journal bag (shown in this post) using the limited supplies and the tools I had with me to create the book and to start work on the pages. The size, weight and portability, along with the limited amount of supplies you need make this the perfect journal for life on the go or close to home. I love sticking my collage ephemera, a couple of pens and a glue stick in a baggie with the journal. I'm all about portability and ease!

This class does not close so you can take the workshop ANY time and work at your own pace! Once you've signed up for Revel in the Moment, you are in the workshop!

Playing with my Camera Apps

I love playing with my camera apps! One of my favorites is fx camera. Whenever I buy my $5 farmers market roses, I snap photos of them. I love snapping the photos but I need to remember to print them out! They would make great backgrounds for my journal pages.

I hope to have a big announcement tomorrow! I'm super excited about it and I hope that you will be, too. I have been working very hard on it and I am eager to share.

What's in my Journal Bag November 2011

I had a discussion on facebook last night regarding journal bag contents. I thought I would post the contents of my bag today:

-Inside the bag (in the center) an Eagle Creek Pack-It system cube holding my collage ephemera. The pack-it bag opens on two sides. One side has focal images and the other has background papers and transparencies.

-The journal bag has odd side pockets that contain my journal (about 8 1/2 x 11"), a ziploc bag full of stickers and another full of rub-ons.

Outside of the bag (but it all fits neatly inside) are:

-Eagle Creek Pack-It Cube holding my pens (Kohinoor rapidosketch .35 and .50 (I put black ink only in the .35 and other inks in the .50. You can see the ink refill in the ziploc bag near the Sta-on pad.) Other pens in the bag are Pilot pocket brush pen, Zebra Sarasas, Uniball Signos, Sharpie waterbased paint markers, Pentel Metallic Brush markers, a small metal ruler and bone folders.)

-Other pens in the photo are Pudding pens (made in Korea), Pilot Latte and Sweets (in the small pink cigarette case which I bought in Japantown, SF for $.99) and a pink butterfly case filled with Sakura Glaze snd Shuffle pens. (My favorite go to pens are rapidosketch .35 in black, Sakura Glaze, Souffle and Aqualip, Pilot Sweets and Lattes.)

-A small tin filled with Caran d'ache Neo Art Watersoluble Wax Pastel Crayons

-Tape (love the printed transparent tape from Tapeswell, O-check and Prima Marketing) as well as various MT and Marks washi paper tapes (usually bought from Washimatta and Ginko Papers)

-Coccoina glue stick (40 grams)

-Tonic scissors

-Metal Ruler (for tearing paper)

-Staz-on ink pad

-Tim Holtz tiny attacher and staples

-Rag (for burnishing and wiping off excess glue)

The only thing not in the photo is an old magazine or catalog that I usually use as a glue surface and then I toss it in the recycle bin. I also usually have a small container of baby wipes for sticky fingers.

I work from this bag regardless as to whether or not I'm home or traveling. I bought it a couple of years ago at Artful Living in Ojai. It's been my favorite journal bag since!

A Small Portion of my Picture Book Collection

One of the things that I've been doing for many years now is collecting picture books. I've included a few of my favorites in the photo above. They're not only pleasant to read but they're also visually appealing and extremely inspiring. My collection also includes books from the early 1900's.

I tend to pick the books up in my travels to the used and indie bookstores that I frequent (both locally and nationally). Each book tells a story as I can usually tell you where, how, why or with whom that I bought the book.

Two of my favorite artists (not included in the above photo) are Maira Kalman and Shaun Tan. I hope to do a separate post on their books soon.

Home today prepping for my class at Zinnia tomorrow as well doing some other work for something which I'll be announcing soon. Yes, my work doesn't stop but I am very grateful to have a job that I love. I really mean it when I say that my students are the best. I am extremely thankful for them in so many ways.

Later on, I'll make roasted veggies, soup and either a cake or pie. We'll watch a movie and hang out. David, Tristan and I are together and I am grateful for these times.

Here's the after page I promised from yesterday. I ended up almost changing the page completely. I really like it. I used various pens including faber castell pitt pens, pilot latte and sweets and a .35 rapidosketch pen. I colored in both the lotus rub-on and the Hambly transparency using the latte and sweets pens.

I started this page in one of my new classes, Journal This. I always demo as I teach. Not only does it help me to explain the technique and ideas, but it also gives me the opportunity to show students the many different ways to approach a journal page.

I encourage students to learn in class by working on a piece but then to go home and work some more on that same piece in the comfort if your own home and see how you can make it more you.

It's very interesting to see the evolution of a page that is started in one location and finished in another. The piece changed completely by the time that I was done with it.

One last note regarding my Friday class, last I heard it was almost full. There are only one or two seats left so if you're interested in signing up for "A Beautiful Life", don't wait much longer!

I really like how the page changed into something else. I started by adding the focal image of the woman, then layering on top with a portion of a transparency. I also went in and added more rub-ons. I had a lot of journaling to get out so that was the last bit that I added to the page.

I graduated with a B.A. in Expressive Arts and Music and am very interested in pursuing a further career in the healing modalities of arts. I am an avid songwriter, but also keep an art journal, want to learn more about mixed media, art for social change, and have done some non-profit work in the Theatre Arts area. I can also make films, am a pretty good photographer and a dancer. I am in search of part/full time work as an assistant of some kind (keep in mind I'm sort of Renassiance-ish so I'll do anything!) because I value learning from my elders! Home from a great day of teaching at Stampin from the Heart. It was a small group but we had fun! I always love teaching there. (Thanks Judy, Laura and Tricia.)

One of the things you'll notice lately in my work is that I've been using lots of book and magazine paper as background fodder. I'm finding myself reaching more for that kind of paper and less for store bought. Interesting how things work. I "blame" it on my Journey of You journal (the one that became the online class). The J.O.Y. journal really changed how I looked at paper in general. Now everything really is fair game.

If you look close, the paper above is actually a stone wall turned on its side. I love the texture that it creates. I'll show you the finished page tomorrow.

It's a busy week so this is a short post!

I played around with my Sakura Glaze and Souffle Pens along with a Crafters' Workshop stencil. I pulled color from the focal image using the Sakura pens to make it pop some more.

I am enjoying posting before and after shots on the blog. I have some more to show you this week.

One trick with the Glaze and Souffle pens, if the color is too light when you put your first coat down, let it dry completely and then layer a second (or even third) coat on top. The trick is really to let the pen work dry completely before moving on.

Harlan Ellison at Cinefamily

Last night, we trekked over to Cinefamily on Fairfax to see the great Harlan Ellison. It. was. amazing. Ellison spoke for almost four hours. He was also extremely gracious enough to stay after wards (for well over an hour) to sell and sign books. We were one of the last people in line. He had been talking to someone else when he motioned to Tristan that he would sign his book. We said our thanks and started to leave. We were half way up the aisle when Ellison called out, "Hey kid!" Tristan turned around. He asked his name as well as, "Do the kids at school fuck with you?" Tristan shrugged and smiled, "Sometimes." Ellison said, "Do you want to learn some moves on how to take care of that?" Tristan said Ellison had one helluva grip. He grabbed his hand and showed him how to lock an opponent's thumb down and disable him. Ellison then invited Tristan over to his house, "after 2 and I'll show you some more moves." He then told Tristan to get rid of his shorts (trade them out for long pants). It was definitely one memorable night. If you're an Ellison fan, you probably already know this but just in case, you can buy books directly from him here.

I love layering with paper. Right now, my heart belongs to collage. I am always excited at the possibility of a different outcome and weighing the direction in which to finish off the page. As I tell my students, there isn't a "wrong" way to make a page, only many possibilities and outcomes. It's very interesting when you start to narrow down your choices and see what the page is becoming. I equate it with painting but using paper instead!

I only have a handful of classes left this year. I'm teaching two this weekend in L.A. I'm super excited about this Sunday's class. If you are looking for a class where the main focus IS collage, then get on over to Stampin' From the Heart and sign up for this Sunday's Sacred Place class. Home from a fun weekend at Frenzy Stamper. Above is a page that I did for Debbie in her class books. She keeps records of classes at her store. I love it. She was flipping back to when I first started teaching there. Hard to believe it's been that long. I have always adored teaching at Frenzy Stamper. Looking forward to returning in February. Heartfelt thanks again to Debbie and my wonderful students.

Off to rest now. It's a long, boring drive from Scottsdale to L.A. especially alone and at night! That bed will feel good tonight!

Journal Page in Progress

I started this page a couple of weeks ago as a demo in one of my new classes (Musings). I always stress to students to experiment with new ideas in class and then go home and see how much further you can push a page. There's never a "wrong" way of doing something only a different way of approaching and finishing it! I'll show you the finished page soon.

All prepped, packed and ready for my Frenzy Stamper classes this weekend. I'm leaving in the morning and will be blogging on the road.

I just spent the morning having a conversation with a good friend (also a student who has taken tons of my classes over the years) about layering and creating art journal pages. She struggles with it (as do many people.) She said that I make it look easy. It's not easy. It can be a struggle. I don't love every page that I do and I'm okay with that.

To me, the most important part in the act of art journaling is the unfolding. It's the process of first putting down a base (be it paint or paper or whatever) and then adding another layer on top of it, and then stopping to ponder, "What if?" and then exploring that new idea. Re-working, pushing, pulling, putting together different elements that you like to create a cohesive page.

The final act for me is always adding my journaling to the page. I step back and ask myself, "Have I said everything that I've wanted to say here?" If so, then I know I'm done. If not, I'll push and pull some more with the page (maybe stepping away from it and looking back to see if it needs more color, texture, or even written words.)

The thing is, I am not after perfect pages. Not in any way. I'm after the experience of what it feels like to open up, to express myself both visually and in the written word onto a page. As I've stated before, I don't love every page that I do. If I don't love a page and I've done all I can, instead of ripping it out, I'll either try to rework it some more or just turn the page and move on as I have a whole book to fill.

Your artwork will evolve and change just as you will with time. The more we discover, learn and open ourselves up to new experiences, the more we change. It's very interesting to go back and look at your work from a month ago, a year ago, five years ago, etc... It's all different. It's all "good". It's all part of the process!

A quick reminder that I am teaching at Frenzy Stamper in Scottsdale, AZ THIS weekend. I am super excited to be teaching these workshops. I have three brand spanking new workshops (two of which had their debut in Oakland a couple of weekends ago) that I am eager to share. I am always excited about taking my students (both beginner to advanced) to another level and I feel that these workshops are pushing them to approach their work in a new way. (I only teach what I love and am most passionate about and I LOVED seeing what the students did in Oakland with these ideas, techniques and prompts.)
