It's Oscar season in Hollyweird and since we live here, David and I like to try to take full advantage of it. We haven't seen as many films as we'd like to have seen (it's always due to a shortage in either time, money or both) but we like to try to attend screenings with the crew and cast in attendance as much as possible. In the past month, we've seen The Hateful Eight (twice in 70mm and once with Tarantino in attendance who went out of his way to sign autographs not only in the theatre but also outside going down a row of people signing one thing for everyone), Star Wars: The Force Awakens (we stood outside for the premiere and then saw it opening day), Grandma (with Lily Tomlin and director Paul Weitz in attendance), The Revenant (with cast and crew in attendance), Tangerine, Carol (with Todd Haynes in attendance who graciously stayed after the film to talk to audience members) and Room (with cast and crew in attendance and unfortunately, the only film on this list that I didn't like as I thought it felt like a made for a Lifetime or Hallmark cable drama.)

On Saturday we went to the American Cinematheque for a free event with the Best Foreign Film Golden Globe Nominees (these are all on our list to see especially Son of Saul, Mustang and The Brand New Testament.) What I really appreciated about this event was after the talk ended, the directors mingled with the audience. Usually after a screening, the crew/cast are quickly hustled out of the venue and into a car. This didn't happen on Saturday. Instead, the directors hung out and spoke with audience members, signed autographs and posed for photos. It was a refreshing and much appreciated change.

My favorite films that I've seen of 2015 were The Big Short (hands down, my number one favorite, must see film of the year), The Hateful Eight, Where to Invade Next, Adieu to Language, Jauja, Crimson Peak and The Assassin (these are the top seven photos, in order, at the top of this blog post.) I'm looking forward to seeing The Martian, Spotlight and (hopefully) Heart of a Dog within the next couple of weeks.

What films have you seen lately?

So funny. I usually like everything that you do, but I didn't really like Crimson Peak. It was beautiful, but I found it... meh, okay..... My favourite film last year was Mad Max - Fury Road. But I have only been to the theatre twice :)

I haven't seen Mad Max yet. I was holding out for the black and white version.

I loved the cinematography and costumes in Crimson Peak. It wasn't a perfect story but there is something about it that grabbed me. I try to find something unique in every film. If I am thinking about it for days, it goes on the list. ;)

Saw Starwars and I liked it a lot. Loved The Big Short. Martian was good but I don't think it was a comedy. Gripped me at the end as was not sure how it would end. Went to see Hateful Eight as I like Quentin's movies. Thanks for posting. You get a cool perspective where you live since you can see actors and directors in person.
