What You'll Find Here

I post daily (photos of my journal pages, things that inspire me and personal bits and pieces) to inspire and encourage others. I have always believed that if I can do it, so can you.

You'll find resources (my favorite supplies, books, slideshows of my art journal pages, favorite bloggers, etc...) listed along the right hand side of my blog.

I've been teaching both in person and online workshops for almost twenty years now. You can find out more about my classes by scrolling down along the right hand side of my blog. I strive to make classes accessible to everyone (both beginner to advanced).

I love teaching and truly believe that deep down inside everyone is an artist, capable of creating something. There is power and knowledge in the act of creating something with your own hands, made from your own heart and head.

If you have any questions, please feel free to email me at EGorey99@sbcglobal.net

Thanks for stopping by!

What I'm Reading

“Time to leave now, get out of this room, go somewhere, anywhere; sharpen this feeling of happiness and freedom, stretch your limbs, fill your eyes, be awake, wider awake, vividly awake in every sense and every pore.”
-Stefan Zweig, The Post-Office Girl

I should be finished with Stefan Zweig's The Post Office Girl by the end of today. Deciding on which Zweig book to read next.

(Update: I finished it. I loved it and would recommend it. Still not sure which book I'll be picking up to read next later on tonight.)

I was quite happy to find a copy of Kierkegaard's Diary as I had been looking for it for some time now. I also picked up Kafka's Diaries while looking for a copy of Letters to Felice (no luck yet on that one.)

What are you reading?

22 October 2014 Journal Page

"Be proud of your mistakes. Well, proud may not be exactly the right word, but respect them, treasure them, be kind to them, learn from them. And, more than that, and more important than that, make them. Make mistakes. Make great mistakes, make wonderful mistakes, make glorious mistakes. Better to make a hundred mistakes than to stare at a blank piece of paper too scared to do anything wrong." -Neil Gaiman

A Journey in Black and White

I started this journal on the 22nd of October 2014. This is my second black and white book (the first one I made many moons ago.) I'll be sharing the pages with you for the next couple of weeks. I limited my imagery to black and white with tiny pops of color added with markers, pens and what not. I hope that you enjoy seeing the book as much as I loved working in it.

What I'm Reading...

I'm on a bit of a Stefan Zweig kick at the moment. Thanks, Wes Anderson.

For some reason, all of the L.A. bookstores are out of Zweig's books. There must be have been a run on them and I was (as usual) late to the party.

Found a bunch of Gide's journals at my favorite bookstore last night. Love Iliad Books in North Hollywood.

Making My Mark: Line and Shape

Making My Mark: Session Three: Line and Shape

What's so special about this class?

We are going to be learning exciting new ways to incorporate LINE and SHAPES in Making My Mark: Session Three: Line and Shape.

What do I mean by line and shape?
In this class you will be learning all new collage techniques with an emphasis on exploring line and shape in your work. Explore new and unique ways of drawing the viewer into your page. Learn how to make your pages pop, dance and sing. Experiment with a variety of ideas on how to use shape in your work to make your pages truly one of a kind.
There are all NEW collage ideas! You will learn the multiple aspects of COLLAGE!,  ART JOURNALING!, COMPOSITION, DESIGN! and a whole lot more. If you love working with paper (in all forms, from scrapbook paper to handmade paper to paper found in the streets), this is the class for you. If you like my journal pages and you're curious as to how I create them, this is the class for you. If you are brand new to art making and don't know how or where to start, this is the class for you. If you have been an artist for many years and are eager for a creative kick in the pants, this is the class for you.

The focus of this session will be adding line and shape to your pages!

I'll share my journal pages along with side by side templates so you can see exactly how I put my pages together. You can follow my lead, but I will also give you lots of "springboard" ideas designed to help jump start your "What if?" creative mode.

Although the focus will be on collage, art journaling, etc..., these ideas and techniques can be used for ANY art form. My classes may be called art journaling classes but this does not mean that I am teaching only one subject. Ultimately, my classes exist to encourage your creativity. I want you to take these ideas and make them your own, and I will help you do that.

These are ideas that you will return to repeatedly in your work and that can be used in a wide variety of art forms.

In this new class, you can make 31 pages or you can pick and choose the ideas to fit your own needs.
Are there photos?

Yes, there are photos of my sample pages. You will also have the opportunity to upload and share (if you wish) your own sample pages.

How is the class set up?

We are going to be using a closed, private yahoo group to access the class materials. There you will also be able to interact with each other as well as post photos, ask questions, etc. You are free to email me at ANY time with questions, etc... I will respond to each and every email sent. I will also offer feedback.
Is there a handout?

YES! I am a firm believer in handouts. You will receive an extensive 49+ page handout (for you to download, save and print out) that contains ALL NEW collage, journaling, and mixed media ideas. There are step by step instructions, 31 collage templates, tons of information, photos and more.

What's the supply list?

I really want you to use stuff that you already have on hand. For the pages, you need:

  • glue (a glue stick, gel medium, whatever adhesive you usually use for paper)
  • pens and markers (again, use what you have on hand.)
  • scissors
  • an old rag or paper towel for burnishing the images
  • a gluing surface (like an old catalog)
  • collage ephemera: photos, print outs, handmade paper, decorative paper, old magazines, catalogs or books for the collage part of the class (basically you are looking for anything that YOU would use to create a collage.)
  • Everything else (ruler (for tearing paper), stencils, decorative tape, rubber stamps, rub-ons, etc...) is completely optional!
All you need is paper, pens, scissors and glue!

I work full time. Can I take this class at any time?

Yes! This is a work at your own pace class. You can sign up at any point. You will have full access to the class. I am always available to answer and respond to questions.

When does the class start?

Within 24 hours of you signing up, you will receive an email from me with information on how to access the class material. The class is work at your own pace and the material is available for you to access now.

How much does it cost?

$25

Please note there are no refunds once you receive the course materials.

Please also respect the amount of time, effort and work it took me to create this material. You can download, save and print out this material (or read it on your ipad, kindle, etc.) for personal use. I'm a one woman (very small) business and I work very hard at what I do. I strive to offer the best material possible. I'm always excited about what I teach and I hope that you get the most out of my classes. This helps to support my work and makes me able to offer more classes and come up new ideas!

If you teach children, feel free to work on the exercises with them! I don't mind people who teach kids using these ideas in classes! Get 'em started and hooked on art young is my motto!

Can I give the class as a gift?

Sure! If you email me or include a note with your payment, I will email the file to whomever you'd like.

Who is this class geared for?

Everyone! I strive to make my classes accessible for beginners to advanced students. I have been working in and teaching this medium for over 18 years now and I learn something new with every workshop.

When is the best time to take this workshop?

When I came up with the idea for this class, I wanted to make it accessible for folks to work in their journal ANYWHERE at ANYTIME. I worked in this journal as I taught and traveled. The size, weight and portability, along with the limited amount of supplies you need make this the perfect journal for life on the go or close to home. It's small enough that you can put it in your purse with a glue stick and a pen. I love sticking my collage ephemera, a couple of pens and a glue stick in a baggie with the journal. I'm all about portability and ease!

This class does not close! You can sign-up and take the workshop ANY time and work at your own pace! Once you've signed up for Making My Mark: Line and Shape, you are in the workshop!

My Current View

Some of my regular blog readers may know that my favorite place to work from is my living room floor. I recently bought a foldable tray table (meant for use in bed) for $15 from Bed, Bath and Beyond. It's the perfect height for a mini floor table. No more hunching over for me!

I have my art journal bag to my left and all necessary supplies within reach. I grab what I need, tune into old time radio shows and I'm good to go.

Where do you work from?

My Valentine's Day Present

The munchkins arrived three days early in an effort to get out of Boston before another major snow storm hit. I'm teaching tomorrow and between now and when they leave, I have a couple of homeschool classes and private classes scheduled. When I'm not teaching, I'll be running around with these two monkeys! Hide your chocolate and your Lego!

An Open Heart Journal
1-5 p.m.

This journal was a game changer for me and it could be the same for you. Working in different sizes has always pushed me to think outside of the box. I always try to do the same with my classes and in this class you will be pushed out of your comfort zone but I  guarantee you will love every minute. We'll start by binding the journal with a cool looking stitch. Then, we'll dive in on the pages creating rich layers by combining collage with some of my favorite tools.

Prepare to think large in this class and start to gather your large ephemera that you've been hoarding. Don't worry what you're going to do with it, just bring it with you.
Supply list: scissors, small selection of favorite collage ephemera (you may want to bring all of your LARGE ephemera that you've been saving though any size papers will work, too!), bone folder, cork back metal ruler, roll of waxed paper, roll of paper towels OR an old rag, permanent black inkpad,  1" brush to glue (I like chip or bristle brushes), a few of your favorite glue sticks, an old catalog or magazine to glue on (if you don't want to use all of your waxed paper for this.)
