What You'll Find Here

I post daily (photos of my journal pages, things that inspire me and personal bits and pieces) to inspire and encourage others. I have always believed that if I can do it, so can you.

You'll find resources (my favorite supplies, books, slideshows of my art journal pages, favorite bloggers, etc...) listed along the right hand side of my blog.

I've been teaching both in person and online workshops for almost twenty years now. You can find out more about my classes by scrolling down along the right hand side of my blog. I strive to make classes accessible to everyone (both beginner to advanced).

I love teaching and truly believe that deep down inside everyone is an artist, capable of creating something. There is power and knowledge in the act of creating something with your own hands, made from your own heart and head.

If you have any questions, please feel free to email me at EGorey99@sbcglobal.net

Thanks for stopping by!

Books by the Bed

I posted the above image on my Instagram page last night. This is part of the shelving unit next to my bed. I've been trying to reorganize and get these books off of the floor:

and onto different shelves throughout the apartment:

In my family, we consider books to be a part of the basic necessities. I will buy books before art supplies. It is quite a challenge to live in a small space and try to have a library at the same time.

I've made the photos nice and big because I know that I'm not the only one who loves looking at what's on other folks' shelves. These are only the books within reach when I lie in by my bed.

The Paper Collage Sun City West, AZ March 6th and 7th Workshops

I am very happy to announce that I will be teaching four NEW workshops at The Paper Collage in Sun City West, AZ

Interested in signing up? Please contact Pamela at The Paper Collage. The samples will be in the store within the next week.

Questions? Please email Kelly for more info! EGorey99@sbcglobal.net

I will be offering fresh, new workshops teaching a variety of NEW bookbinding, collage, creative processing, self expression, composition, design, layering and much, much more. My workshops are always process-based learning while creating a unique product.

I am well known for not traveling light and bring a large variety of supplies including (but not limited to) collage material, rubber stamps, stencils, pens, markers, tape and more. There is a small supply list below each class description.

The Schedule is:

Friday, March 6th

Deep Within: Journal Bundles

Rarely do we think of art making as a gift to ourselves. In this special four hour workshop, we will transform old books, found ephemera, and much, much more into our own precious journal bundles. Revamp and revitalize materials to create your own self expressive pieces of art.

Supply list:
a small selection of favorite ribbon (you will need one piece at least 3' long) or string pieces, scissors, small selection of favorite collage ephemera, bone folder, cork back metal ruler, roll of waxed paper, roll of paper towels OR an old rag, permanent black inkpad,  1" brush to glue (I like chip or bristle brushes), a few of your favorite glue sticks, an old catalog or magazine to glue on (if you don't want to use all of your waxed paper for this.)
Please bring an x-acto knife and cutting mat ONLY if you have one.

Painting with Paper: Advanced Collage for Everyone

This is a class that I have been wanting to teach for some time now. I've developed a class that's fit for beginner to advanced students who are eager to push the envelope with their collage work.
You will spend the class time focusing on creating an expressive series of collaged pages that are full of rich layers. Learn how to step back and push your pages to a deeper level. There is something for everyone in this class.
We will be learning new collage techniques while focusing on painting with paper, layering with pens/markers, tape, stencils, rubber stamps, text and much, much more. Learn new and unique tips, tricks and techniques for collage work that can be applied to a wide variety of art forms.
Supply list: Journal to work on (or I will have paper for you to use), scissors, small selection of favorite collage ephemera, bone folder, cork back metal ruler, roll of paper towels OR an old rag, permanent black inkpad,  1" brush to glue (I like chip or bristle brushes) OR a few of your favorite glue sticks, an old catalog or magazine to glue on (if you don't want to use all of your waxed paper for this.)

Saturday, March 7th:

Journey into the Self

In this four hour journey, you will create a bound book with pages attached that fold up, out and down. You will then dive in and learn new techniques for collage, art journaling, mixed media and self expression. Explore painting with paper; layering your letters and images; color secrets and much, much more. I guarantee that you will love working in this journal as much as I did!
Supply list: scissors, small selection of favorite collage ephemera, bone folder, cork back metal ruler, roll of waxed paper, roll of paper towels OR an old rag, permanent black inkpad,  1" brush to glue (I like chip or bristle brushes), a few of your favorite glue sticks, an old catalog or magazine to glue on (if you don't want to use all of your waxed paper for this.)

Moments of Me

Spend four hours creating a uniquely constructed journal made entirely by your own hands. After we make the journal, we will spend the rest of the class learning a myriad of new ideas for self expression and creativity upon its pages. Learn new ideas for art journaling, collage, composition, design and much, much more. I absolutely loved working in this journal and I guarantee that you will, too!

I hope to see you there!

Godard's Goodbye to Language

"each person must think that the other is a dreamer."

I have work to do and yet I can't get this damn film out of my head. Images and words flash before my eyes. I can't stop thinking about them. Water. Blue. Hands. Red. Waves. The scenes where if you close one eye you see one image and another image appears if the opposite eye is closed. The things that cement themselves in our brain.

But then, how many critics actually want to learn something about cinema, which can only happen the way we learn anything: by wrestling with something that strikes us as difficult?" -David Bordwell

For after you see the film:
"Adieu au langage" - "Goodbye to Language": A Works Cited

"When - the sun already piercing - the river still sleeping in the dreams of fog, we do not see it anymore than it sees itself. Here it is already the river, and the eye is arrested, one no longer sees anything but a void, a fog which prevents one from seeing farther. In that part of the canvas, one must paint neither what one sees, since one sees nothing, nor what one doesn’t see, since one must paint only what one sees; but to paint what one doesn’t see." -Marcel Proust (though Godard attributed it to Monet in the film.)

16 October 2014 Journal Page

The To Do List is massive this week. Putting the finishing touches on my latest online class that focuses on adding text to your work (as a reminder, it's available at a discounted price through Friday.) I am really looking forward to seeing what folks do with this one!

Also making the time to prep for some upcoming classes (San Diego and Torrance are this weekend.) The family is coming out in a couple of weeks to visit (Mom, my sister and her two munchkins.) Rearranging the studio and a clean up of that area (my studio is my living room) is in order.

I've been reading Where the Heart Beats about John Cage and loving it. I'm reading about Cage and Marcel Duchamp's friendship. It's hard to put this book down.

“It is not futile to do what we do. We wake up with energy and we do something. And we make, of course, failures and we make mistakes, but we sometimes get glimpses of what we might do next.” -John Cage

What I'm Reading

I picked up all of these over time at my favorite bookstore, Iliad in North Hollywood. Yay to damn good used bookstores! Iliad is the BEST!

I brought John Cage with me this weekend. It's a great read so far.

Making My Mark: Text

Making My Mark: Session Two: Text

What's so special about this class?

We are going to be learning exciting new ways to incorporate TEXT in Making My Mark: Session Two: Text.

What do I mean by adding text?

While this is NOT a calligraphy class, I will inspire and give you direction, ideas, exercises, new techniques and support for adding your own unique TEXT to the page. Want to learn to love your handwriting? Eager to explore fresh new ways to add visual interest to your pages? This class pushed ME out of my comfort zone with my handwriting and I know that it will do the same for you!

There are all NEW collage ideas! You will learn the multiple aspects of COLLAGE!,  ART JOURNALING!, COMPOSITION, DESIGN! and a whole lot more. If you love working with paper (in all forms, from scrapbook paper to handmade paper to paper found in the streets), this is the class for you. If you like my journal pages and you're curious as to how I create them, this is the class for you. If you are brand new to art making and don't know how or where to start, this is the class for you. If you have been an artist for many years and are eager for a creative kick in the pants, this is the class for you.

The focus of this session will be adding TEXT to your pages!

I'll share my journal pages along with side by side templates so you can see exactly how I put my pages together. You can follow my lead, but I will also give you lots of "springboard" ideas designed to help jump start your "What if?" creative mode.

Although the focus will be on collage, art journaling and adding text, these ideas and techniques can be used for ANY art form. My classes may be called art journaling classes but this does not mean that I am teaching only one subject. Ultimately, my classes exist to encourage your creativity. I want you to take these ideas and make them your own, and I will help you do that.

In this new class, you can make 28 pages or you can pick and choose the ideas to fit your own needs.

Are there photos?

Yes, there are photos of my sample pages. You will also have the opportunity to upload and share (if you wish) your own sample pages.

How is the class set up?

We are going to be using a closed, private yahoo group to access the class materials. There you will also be able to interact with each other as well as post photos, ask questions, etc. You are free to email me at ANY time with questions, etc... I will respond to each and every email sent. I will also offer feedback.

Is there a handout?

YES! I am a firm believer in handouts. You will receive an extensive 62 page handout (for you to download, save and print out) that contains ALL NEW collage, journaling, handwriting, and mixed media ideas. There are step by step instructions, 28 collage templates, tons of information, photos and more.

What's the supply list?

I really want you to use stuff that you already have on hand. For the pages, you need:
  • glue (a glue stick, gel medium, whatever adhesive you usually use for paper)
  • pens and markers (again, use what you have on hand.)
  • scissors
  • an old rag or paper towel for burnishing the images
  • a gluing surface (like an old catalog)
  • collage ephemera: photos, print outs, handmade paper, decorative paper, old magazines, catalogs or books for the collage part of the class (basically you are looking for anything that YOU would use to create a collage.)
  • Everything else (ruler (for tearing paper), stencils, decorative tape, rubber stamps, rub-ons, etc...) is completely optional!
All you need is paper, pens, scissors and glue!

I work full time. Can I take this class at any time?

Yes! This is a work at your own pace class. You can sign up at any point. You will have full access to the class. I am always available to answer and respond to questions.

When does the class start?

Within 24 hours of you signing up, you will receive an email from me with information on how to access the class material. The class is work at your own pace and the material is available now.
How much does it cost?

$25

Please note there are no refunds once you receive the course materials.

Please also respect the amount of time, effort and work it took me to create this material. You can download, save and print out this material (or read it on your ipad, kindle, etc.) for personal use. I'm a one woman (very small) business and I work very hard at what I do. I strive to offer the best material possible. I'm always excited about what I teach and I hope that you get the most out of my classes. This helps to support my work and makes me able to offer more classes and come up new ideas!

If you teach children, feel free to work on the exercises with them! I don't mind people who teach kids using these ideas in classes! Get 'em started and hooked on art young is my motto!

Can I give the class as a gift?

Sure! If you email me or include a note with your payment, I will email the file to whomever you'd like.

Who is this class geared for?

Everyone! I strive to make my classes accessible for beginners to advanced students. I have been working in and teaching this medium for over 18 years now and I learn something new with every workshop.

When is the best time to take this workshop?

When I came up with the idea for this class, I wanted to make it accessible for folks to work in their journal ANYWHERE at ANYTIME. I worked in this journal as I taught and traveled. The size, weight and portability, along with the limited amount of supplies you need make this the perfect journal for life on the go or close to home. It's small enough that you can put it in your purse with a glue stick and a pen. I love sticking my collage ephemera, a couple of pens and a glue stick in a baggie with the journal. I'm all about portability and ease!

This class does not close! You can sign-up and take the workshop ANY time and work at your own pace! Once you've signed up for Making My Mark: Session Two: Text, you are in the workshop!
