I've been reading Sharon Louden's wonderful book, Living and Sustaining a Creative Life: Essays by 40 Working Artists.

I've always loved the thought process about why one makes art. Books like this one help to make me feel less alone. Folks often look at artists as if they are alien outsiders. They don't understand the passion or need that artists feel to simply make stuff (insert art of choice here.) They don't understand why art is valuable, sustainable or even a priority to so many of us.
My eighteen year art career has been a roller coaster ride. I understand that it's the life of an artist. I've always chosen family and art over making oodles of money. Some months are a little bit better than others but mostly it's a struggle.
I am hoping that 2015 presents some new opportunities for me that will allow me to continue doing what I love, teaching others to explore their creativity, finding new ways to push myself as an art teacher, an artist and a human being. Sharon Louden's book has been very helpful in giving me some new ideas to explore and mull about in my head.
Again, I don't need to be rich. Like most folks, I just want to do just a little bit more than barely survive and tread water.
