What You'll Find Here

I post daily (photos of my journal pages, things that inspire me and personal bits and pieces) to inspire and encourage others. I have always believed that if I can do it, so can you.

You'll find resources (my favorite supplies, books, slideshows of my art journal pages, favorite bloggers, etc...) listed along the right hand side of my blog.

I've been teaching both in person and online workshops for almost twenty years now. You can find out more about my classes by scrolling down along the right hand side of my blog. I strive to make classes accessible to everyone (both beginner to advanced).

I love teaching and truly believe that deep down inside everyone is an artist, capable of creating something. There is power and knowledge in the act of creating something with your own hands, made from your own heart and head.

Pen Love: JetPens Order Review

JetPens has started up their program again where they send select artists a $25 gift certificate. I always have a hard time narrowing down the pens that I wanted to try but here's what I bought this time:

Pilot Hi-Tec-C Maica Gel Ink Pen - 0.4 mm  (bought orange, red, apricot orange, light blue, green, blue, black, pink and blue black.)
I bought a few of these pens over the last few months and loved them. The Pilot Hi-Tec-C Maica Gel Ink Pen is a fine tip, water-based gel pen that writes very smoothly, no skipping and it's not scratchy at all. I love the colors and the super fine tip. They are quite yummy on paper (even on handmade paper.)

The other pen in the above photo (on the left) is a .38 Morning Glory Mach 3 Roller Ball Pen in Flash Pink. The ink quality is too much like a high lighter for me. I can't really recommend it unless you want a fine tip highlighter pen.

I am an obvious sucker for gel pens. A few folks have asked my opinion on the Pilot Juice pens. I bought a few pens in both the .5 and .7 range to experiment with. They glide on paper. I love the colors that I bought (see the above photo.) I don't know if I need every color that they make but they are definitely a good quality gel pen for use on paper.

*****

As an fyi, none of the above pens (Pilot Juice or Hi-Tec-Maica) are permanent on dried acrylics or paper tape/washi tape.

*****

My favorite gel pens are still the Sakura Glaze and Souffle. They write on a wide variety of surfaces (paper, tape, dried acrylics, even glass!)

"I've seen women insist on cleaning everything in the house before they could sit down to write... and you know it's a funny thing about housecleaning... it never comes to an end. Perfect way to stop a woman. A woman must be careful to not allow over-responsibility (or over-respectabilty) to steal her necessary creative rests, riffs, and raptures. She simply must put her foot down and say no to half of what she believes she "should" be doing. Art is not meant to be created in stolen moments only."

I found my priorities today: art, nap, reading, and time with family and friends.

What I'm Reading this Weekend

I finally found a copy of Collage (published by Abrams.) I'd been looking for it for years.

Kinfolk is now sold at Barnes and Noble and this weekend is double discount days so I couldn't resist new collage materials.

David and I went to the premiere of Jack and the Cuckoo-Clock Heart the other day. I loved the look of it. The book is supposed to be quite different than the film so I'm looking forward to reading it.

11 July 2014 Journal Page

Busy week ahead. I had a great time teaching at Make Art in L.A. and The Art Bar this past weekend. I have two classes scheduled this coming weekend (Banana Rose in Westlake Village on Saturday and Book Arts LA on Sunday.) I'll have an in depth look at my coming October schedule this week.

I'm also going to try to get more photos of my studio (aka my section of the living room) taken. For those of who've asked, I'm still working on my list of books to sell. I'm half way done with the list. I was hoping to get them out before the inspection on Friday but that's not going to happen.

7 July 2014 Journal Page

Trekking to The Art Bar in Santa Ana today for one of my favorite classes (okay, I'm partial. I know that I say that about all of them but I can't help it. I love teaching!)

Last night, David and I saw a gorgeous film, The Color of Pomegranates (it's long been one of his favorites and I've added it to my list now, too) at LACMA last night. I can't stop thinking about the film. Having the chance to see such a wide variety of films on the big screen is one of my favorite things about living in Los Angeles.

I can't wait for them to finish building THIS. If you're in or going to be near Los Angeles, you may want to grab a ticket to see the Hollywood Costume Exhibit. It's big on my To Do List.

I have several bags full of pens and markers and a huge bag of acrylic paint. I'll be heading off to teach at Make Art in L.A. Hope that you're also looking forward to your day!

I am very excited to announce that I will be teaching at the Book Arts Los Angeles Center (at the location where Stampin From the Heart used to be.) I taught in the new space last month and it is gorgeous. There is plenty of space to work and an amazing amount of light in the studio. PLUS lots of FREE parking in the back. I am very happy to be teaching there.

Sunday, September  28th   Journey Into the Self

In this four hour journey, you will create a bound book with pages attached that fold up, out and down. You will then dive in and learn new techniques for collage, art journaling, mixed media and self expression. Explore painting with paper; layering your letters and images; color secrets and much, much more. I guarantee that you will love working in this journal as much as I did!

Supply list: scissors, small selection of favorite collage ephemera, bone folder, cork back metal ruler, roll of waxed paper, roll of paper towels OR an old rag, permanent black inkpad,  1" brush to glue (I like chip or bristle brushes), a few of your favorite glue sticks, an old catalog or magazine to glue on (if you don't want to use all of your waxed paper for this.)

Sunday, October 19th Painting with Paper: Advanced Collage for Everyone

This is a class that I have been wanting to teach for some time now. I've developed a class that's fit for beginner to advanced students who are eager to push the envelope with their collage work.
You will spend the class time focusing on creating an expressive series of collaged pages that are full of rich layers. Learn how to step back and push your pages to a deeper level. There is something for everyone in this class.
We will be learning new collage techniques while focusing on painting with paper, layering with pens/markers, tape, stencils, rubber stamps, text and much, much more. Learn new and unique tips, tricks and techniques for collage work that can be applied to a wide variety of art forms.
Supply list: Journal to work on (or I will have paper for you to use), scissors, small selection of favorite collage ephemera, bone folder, cork back metal ruler, roll of paper towels OR an old rag, permanent black inkpad,  1" brush to glue (I like chip or bristle brushes) OR a few of your favorite glue sticks, an old catalog or magazine to glue on (if you don't want to use all of your waxed paper for this.)

Sunday, November 2nd Deep Within: Journal Bundles

Rarely do we think of art making as a gift to ourselves. In this special four hour workshop, we will transform old books, found ephemera, and much, much more into our own precious journal bundles. Revamp and revitalize materials to create your own self expressive pieces of art.

Supply list: a small selection of favorite ribbon (you will need one piece at least 3' long) or string pieces, scissors, small selection of favorite collage ephemera, bone folder, cork back metal ruler, roll of waxed paper, roll of paper towels OR an old rag, permanent black inkpad,  1" brush to glue (I like chip or bristle brushes), a few of your favorite glue sticks, an old catalog or magazine to glue on (if you don't want to use all of your waxed paper for this.)
Please bring an x-acto knife and cutting mat ONLY if you have one.

Sunday, December 14th Moments of Me

Spend four hours creating a uniquely constructed journal made entirely by your own hands. After we make the journal, we will spend the rest of the class learning a myriad of new ideas for self expression and creativity upon its pages. Learn new ideas for art journaling, collage, composition, design and much, much more. I absolutely loved working in this journal and I guarantee that you will, too!

I hope to see you there!
