Thoughts on Why I Teach

Pouring my heart out onto my pages and speaking my truth.
Folks think it's about the money and that teachers in this field rake it in. I make below minimum wage. I always have. Yes, I make my living from teaching but there's a far greater reason than that. I teach because I have to (I am driven to) and want to. I teach because it is what I am most passionate about. Nothing beats the experience of being in a classroom (either a physical or virtual one), giving everyone the same materials and ideas and watching the light bulbs go off as each creates something unique. It's an enriching experience and something that constantly pushes me to become a better teacher and human being. Some thoughts on a Sunday morning reiterated from my journal page.

As someone who has been on the receiving end of your teaching, I can say that it's your passion and honesty that reverberate, through and in you, and in what you are teaching. I was originally drawn to the raw honesty/reveal of your blog posts, then your journal pages (when I began enlarging and studying them -- not the writing exactly, but the entirety of them), and that is the same quality that has sustained my connection to you - almost 7 years now. It's painfully ridiculous to me that someone teaching something so valuable earns so little; thank you for making THAT sacrifice (IF that's even what it feels like to you). I hope you do know how valued you are, by me and many more.

Kelly, this journal page is really creepy (in a good way), all your feelings come through. It is great that you teach because you want to, not because you have to. Like Desert Mermaid said, you are valued, respected and loved. I love your blog and your work. I wish you did earn more, but what you gain in other ways will make up for this. Your happiness and honesty shine through.

Hi Kelly. I just wanted to say that you are so valued, all of the lives and hearts you have inspired, encouraged, helped and given of yourself to... Teachers teach because they love it, certainly not for the money (!) but if what you teach and do had a value beyond its pricelessness it would be oh so much more. We know you deserve much much more than minimum wage... Thank goodness we have our families and journals to save us when we feel like drowning, huh? But I am one of those people that also believe that if we ask the universe for what we need, the universe will give it to us. You nourish the universe, Kelly, and it nourishes you. We are all connected! Big hugs, and thanks for listening to my thoughts, kath
