Expectations

24 and 25th March 2013 Journal Pages

My apologies for this not being the crispest, clearest photo. The journal is already at the store (all ready for the class at the end of May) or else I'd retake it.

It's funny how art journaling sets my heart all a pitter pattering. I love playing with layers and seeing what develops and unravels onto the pages. I always emphasize that art shouldn't be stressful. It should be playful, full of thought and full of you. Art should reflect the person who created it.

I was thinking last night how it angers me (as a teacher as well as an ongoing student in the world around me) when so called experts say that artists should not copy. EVER. Poppycock! Hogwash! Bullshit is what I say! Artists SHOULD copy when they are learning. How else are they going to learn? The Great Masters did that and encouraged their students to do so as well. You copy to learn. Then you push yourself and make it yours. You create so that your voice comes through loud and clear. You learn the rules and then you learn how to break them, twist them and make them yours. That's what is expected of the student by the teacher.

"You have your way. I have my way. As for the right way, the correct way, and the only way, it does not exist." Nietzsche

Thank you for having such a fabulous, visually stimulating, website. I can spend hours lost in your journals. And it doesn't matter how many times I see them, there is always something I missed before. Thank you also for bringing up the copying subject. I found that I needed to do that, I should say TRY to do that to get my feet off the ground. All of my attempts of trying to copy are completely unsuccessful, but what happens is it comes out different and ends up being more me. I laugh and show people my "inspiration" picture and then what my "copy" looked like. Everyone likes both and they look completely different except maybe a couple colors are the same! It has really boosted my confidence. I love your use of magazines and I have been scouring the thrift stores and cutting out images that speak to me. Didn't someone say that "imitation is the sincerest form of flattery"? Just thank you for all the inspiration.
