What You'll Find Here

I post daily (photos of my journal pages, things that inspire me and personal bits and pieces) to inspire and encourage others. I have always believed that if I can do it, so can you.

You'll find resources (my favorite supplies, books, slideshows of my art journal pages, favorite bloggers, etc...) listed along the right hand side of my blog.

I've been teaching both in person and online workshops for almost twenty years now. You can find out more about my classes by scrolling down along the right hand side of my blog. I strive to make classes accessible to everyone (both beginner to advanced).

I love teaching and truly believe that deep down inside everyone is an artist, capable of creating something. There is power and knowledge in the act of creating something with your own hands, made from your own heart and head.

If you have any questions, please feel free to email me at EGorey99@sbcglobal.net

Thanks for stopping by!

14 October 2012 Journal Page

Happy Anniversary, David. It's been seventeen years though it seems like just yesterday we were at Port O'Calls standing hand in hand. My life has never been the same. I love you more and more each year, which I never thought was possible.

A Closer Look at January 2013 Classes

Here's a closer look at my classes for January. I hope to see you there!

JANUARY

Looks can be deceiving. Create this surprisingly complex looking by quite easy journal with pages that flip and fold up and out. You’ve probably never seen anything like this before! The journal is also small enough to slip into your bag for on the go art journaling (I’ve worked in it on a plane, in a car, etc…) After we construct the journal, we will dive deep onto the pages spilling layers of color, texture, pattern, journaling and more. Walk out with your head spinning full of ideas and inspiration!

Supply list: Scissors, small selection of favorite collage ephemera, bone folder, cork back metal ruler, roll of waxed paper, roll of paper towels, permanent black inkpad, container to hold water, 1" brushes to glue (I like chip or bristle brushes), a few of your favorite glue sticks

Combine rich, lush layers of color, text and imagery to create this truly unique vision of your own heart. The covers give the illusion of layers of painted acrylics but we will not be using acrylic paints in this class. The inside pages will be filled with a visual delight of texture, color, pattern and more. This small but sturdy journal is perfect for daily, on the go use. Think of the possibilities that you can pour into this journal at a moment’s notice.

13 October 2012 Journal Page

When I went to bed last night, there was snow on the ground. I woke up this morning and it had been washed away by the rain. It's been interesting weather this trip!

Today we're visiting my Uncle Joe. Not sure how we'll spend the rest of the day but Jack hasn't left Tristan's side. They're really cute together and Tristan is so good with him.

I'm all prepped and ready for my classes at Ink About It. I'm looking forward to seeing some familiar faces as well as meeting some new ones!

Merry Almost Christmas!

I was going through some of my Dad's stuff last night and I found this picture. I thought that it was an appropriate one to post. There's a date on the side that says Feb 1961 so my guess is the picture is from Christmas 1960 in Roxbory, MA. I'll have to find out more about this photo! I know that Dad volunteered for the Boys and Girls Club but I'm not sure if this has anything to do with that. My Mom has the Manger in the back of the photo. It was built by my Dad's Uncle. I loved playing with it as a kid. (Though I didn't do anything like Mr. Bean did.)

Not expecting tomorrow to be an easy day but I'm holding onto the good memories and the love that my family has for each other. All I want for Christmas (other than my Dad to be here) is to be with my family, swap stories about my Dad and listen to his Christmas CDs. I think that he would have appreciated that.

I hope that wherever you are that you have the nicest of days. Thanks for stopping by. Merry Christmas.

Congrats, Ladies! I've emailed each one of you to let you know.

In the meantime, I'm still taking sign ups for my new online class, Marvel: Your Precious Life. I want to stress that even though starting December 31st, you'll be receiving daily worksheets for 31 days that this is a work at your own pace class and that at the end of the class, I will compile the worksheets into one large handout for you to download, save and print. You do not have to do the work daily to enjoy this class! This is a NO stress, FUN class full of new ideas, tips, tricks and techniques! We will be having four chats in January via a private facebook group (more on that here and these are optional.) The class information on making the journal as well as ideas on how to start your pages is actually live and available now on the class site (just an fyi for those of you who want to bind the journal in advance.) I'm also available at any time if you have questions or concerns.

If you've signed up and you haven't received anything from me, please email me at EGorey99@sbcglobal.net as you should have received something by now. THANKS!

11 October 2012 Journal Page

I like to post different pictures on my Instagram feed than what I post here but I can't resist sharing a picture of a sticker that I found in a book last night. I found the book last week at Iliad Books in North Hollywood (one of my most favorite used bookstores). The book was originally bought at Brattle Street Books in Boston (I haven't been there in a very long time but I loved that shop.) Being from Boston originally, it was a fun find:
Spending today working on putting the finishing touches on my latest online class (remember, it's discounted until midnight PST tonight and there's a contest that goes through tonight as well) as well as prepping for my Massachusetts classes that are next week. Hoping to be able to spend tomorrow relaxing with David and Tristan before Christmas on Monday.

It's been such a crazy month that it's nice to be able to slow down a bit (though being very busy has been good at keeping my mind off of things.) I've been throwing myself into my work the last several months so it's odd to slow down and actually think about things. I've been trying not to think about things and the big hole that is left in our lives. It's been a very hard six months but I am grateful for my family, my friends and for having a job that I love so much for keeping me sane and focused. I always say that I have the best students and I honestly mean that with every bit of my heart.

A Bit of Blog Love:

-Kolaj Magazine (I subscribed and it came super fast! I can't wait to dive in! Thank you again, Andrew, for recommending it!)

-Holiday Movie Roundup-Includes two of my favorite films: Shop Around the Corner and The Apartment (holiday must sees in my opinion! The Apartment is the BEST New Years Eve movie!)

-If you love the movie, A Christmas Story, you may want to learn more about Jean Shepherd, the man behind it. I'm a big Shep fan so if you love podcasts, check out his old radio shows on the web.

11 October 2012 New Journal and Journal Pages

It seems like I finished this journal eons ago. I absolutely loved working on every page. There's a thread running through each page that connects it to the other. You'll see it as I post. I really tried to push myself and the direction of this journal as I worked on each page. The name of the book is called, "Connections."

A quick reminder that my new online class, "Marvel: Your Precious Life" is on sale (discounted $5) until Saturday! I am also offering a CONTEST for those of you who sign up before December 22 at 11:59 p.m., you will be entered into a drawing to receive a handmade journal (retail value: $50) made by me and ready for you to work in (there is ONE journal being raffled off! Winner will receive the journal AFTER the holidays.) There will also be FOUR chances to win ONE FREE seat in ANY of my online classes of your choosing (retail value $20-$50.) You MUST sign up before December 22, 2012 for the special sale price as well as to be entered into the contest. More here.

I'm off! It's nice to have checked so much off of my huge, looming To Do list. Today I'll be prepping for my classes next week at Ink About It in Westford, MA. I'm looking forward to it. If you're interested, don't wait much longer as Friday is almost full! My updated 2012/2013 workshop list is here.

**Just found out that if you're interested in signing up for my Ink About It classes that they are closed 12/23-12/26. My classes are the 27th and 28th, if you are on the fence, PLEASE consider signing up before tomorrow (12/22) as I'll be traveling there and this will also help me to prep enough supplies. Friday's classes are almost full but there's plenty of room in Thursday's classes. Thanks!!!**

Happy Winter Solstice! I hope that you have a wonderful weekend.

While we’ll begin this class by creating a stunning portfolio, the main focus on the class is also constructing a set of individualized art journal vision cards. We’ll be creating a small deck of art cards layered with a myriad of collage, pen work and much, much more! With each new book we create, we open ourselves up to a new possibility. How do we take our favorite tools and use them to connect our pages together, creating a unified connection that runs throughout the pages of our journals? In this class we will be open to ideas from each other as we work and share our own unique visions of art exploration in the form of multi-layered collage work.
