Another April 29, 2009 journal page

Only two more pages after this one to show you and then I will introduce you to my new journal.

Tristan and I went to two comic book stores yesterday for Free Comic Book Day. We started the day at Golden Apple Comics (LOVE Golden Apple!!). Got there bright and early for free comic book day and to meet William Shatner. We weren't in a rush since we were able to nab parking (Thank you dear Marge and Norm a.k.a. the Parking Gods). After snarfing down our home made breakfast in the car, Tristan and I decided we should get in line. We ended up being the 4th and 5th person in line. Tristan and I took turns going in and out of the store. We got wrist bans to meet Shatner, yet never left our place in line.

I didn't get the comic I wanted-was slightly annoyed at Tristan about that. I stood in line and held our place while Tristan went inside to get the free comics on his list. I had my list with some of his on it (we were limited to 4 comics each and he wanted a ton and I wanted ONE). So, I told Tristan to go get his comics, then come back out and he could hold our place, I would get my comics and then he could go get his autographs. In the meantime, I'm letting the other 3 guys standing near me go in and am holding their place too. Long story short, Tristan disappears! The little shit! HE WOULD NOT ANSWER HIS CELL PHONE!! I KNEW what he was doing!!! He got his comics and then did what I told him to wait on doing-got in line to have Scott Shaw of Oddball Comics sign his Simpsons book. By the time he was done, it was 45 minutes and he finally came back-my comic was the first one they ran out of. GRRRRRRRRRRR. It's not that I didn't get the comic, but that he didn't listen to me and respect my wishes. Needless to say he got an earfull.

So, the funny thing is-I go back while Tristan is now inline, holding our space. I ask if they have Nancy and Melvin left. Scott Shaw's head whips around and we proceed to have a talk for a few minutes about old comics and how he thought it was cool that people still appreciated them. He was VERY cool...definitely one of the best things about the day! I told him that I love his show he does every year at Comic Con called Oddball Comics. OMG, it is SO funny and such a wonderful show. I walk out holding my sides-it's so well presented.

Back to the line. I ended up getting a little bit of a sunburn around my neck area and some what on my face (I had sunscreen on my face but forgot the shirt I was wearing had a scoop neck!) Tristan spent most of his time IN the store or in the back of the store with the free comics. He met Kevin Eastman (who was VERY cool to him). I shopped a bit in the store as everything was 25% off-woo hoo-buying some Chris Ware for me (well, David too-lol) and a few other titles that hubby requested.

Finally, it was almost 1 o'clock. About 10 minutes after one, they directed us inside the store. There were a ton of photographers there. Scott Davis and Joey Mason also signed (two very friendly guys!!). Some jack ass cut in line. William Shatner didn't even acknowledge any of us-no hi's, no how are you's, no smiles. It was ALL Business. No handshakes. Nothing. It went by very fast. I said hi. He ignored me. I asked him if he would mind if I could please take a quick picture of him with my son. He ignored me. He then signed two more comics (they all started to quickly pile on top of each other in front of him). He looked up, looked at me and said, "No. I have to keep the line moving." and that was it. Shatner then turns to Scott Davis and asks in a not so nice voice, "What is the hold up? We have to keep the line moving." WTF? It WAS moving. What a total ass. TOTAL. Tristan was very disappointed in Shatner's behavior (this is the boy we are raising on comics, sci-fi, fantasy and all things GOOD...INCLUDING Star Trek). I ran into one of the guys we were standing in line with and I shook my head. The guy said, "Yeah, he was an asshole."

Maybe we'll have better luck in the future. I've heard very good things about Mr. Leonard Nimoy and Mr. George Takei.

All in all, Shatner aside, It was a VERY good day. I want to thank Golden Apple Comics from the bottom of my heart for putting a huge smile on my boy's face and for making it a GOOD day for him. They really are one of the BEST stores around. I've been to lots of stores across the U.S. in my travels and Golden Apple is a GEM that stands out.

On the way home we swung by Meltdown Comics as I was trying to find a copy of the Nancy and Melvin the Monster FCBD comic. (No luck in L.A., but my Mom ROCKS! She went out of her way to go to New England Comics in Quincy, MA and snag me a copy. Thanks Mom!!) Meltdown was just as insane as Golden Apple was!!! We popped in and out as I was done dealing with crowds for the day ;)

Your mom ROCKS! And aside from the Shatner experience (urrrrrrrgh!), and Tristan not following mom's request (another urrrrgh!), it sounds like the day was, in the words of Martha Stewart "a good thing" *smiles*

PS lovin' your journal

Your free comic day sound like fun (mostly:). I thought of you yesterday when I saw free comic day advertised at a comic shop near one the the shops I was visiting. :)

We all trekked over to Atomic Comics in Phoenix and got our 8--limited to 2 per person. In honor of natn'l free comic book day I used deleter tones on my journal page for May 2nd (still in progress because of a gazillion interruptions yesterday). Shatner is a jerk! He's no Trekkie, he just happened to play one on TV. We had a similar experience at a comicon a couple of years ago. I can't remember which actor it was, but he was nasty!

Dear Kelly,

He has a VERY short fuse, does our Mr Shatner. (I have that from Gene Roddenberry's former personal assistant) And yup, first class asshole.

But George Takei? Absolutely one of nature's true gentleman. Such a lovely guy, really gracious and giving. I have had the honour of meeting him at two Conventions in Australia.

He can be a wee bit daggy even. VBG!! But never rude or arrogant. I hope you get to meet him!

Cheers

Well, this is a whole new world to me! I have never heard of a 'free comic day'. What fun it sounds. But what a shame about Shatner. I can't say I'm surprised though. What a jerk. There's nothing gets my back up more than famous people being assholes. They're only people, after all. I'd like to have told him 'You're an asshole, do you know that?'

Thank goodness for your Mum and bad boy Tristan! I bet he's relieved you eventually did get your comic. Very interesting post for me.

Shatner has a reputation for not being friendly, OR even respecting his fans. I'm sorry you had to experience that kind of rudeness, though.

I've been told that George Takei is wonderful - he tells some very funny stories about fans (adults who should know better) who have asked him what it felt like to be transported. I suspect Shatner has very little patience for that type of fan and has written everyone off because of it. Sad.

Kelly, I want to meet you so badly!

I met James Doohan in my home town (in London, Ontario) in about 1977 when he gave some kind of a talk at the University. He showed some very hilarious blooper outtakes -- one of William Shatner repeatedly walking into doors (apparently the crew thought it very funny to let him walk into the doors -- the doors were opened manually from above)He's such a Prima Donna. James was a lovely man who let the 12 year old me and my best friend and fellow trekkie ask as many questions as we wanted (we must have gushed for at least 15 minutes -- maybe more)and he posed for pictures with us. Long live Scottie!!
